MODERN FAMILY: FIFTEEN PERCENT (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Claire is exasperated by a complicated new remote control, and Phil notes that she is less than gifted when it comes to technology. Jay introduces Cameron to his buddies as "a friend of his son's," and Manny arranges a date with Whitney, a girl from his online book club, though they are both surprised when she turns out to be significantly older than he is. Mitchell confronts Jay over his offensive phrasing, feeling that he has still not entirely accepted him as gay, and when Jay protests that he was merely accommodating his behind-the-times friends, Mitchell informs him that one of his pals, Shorty, is in fact gay himself. Claire calls Phil for help with the television, and Gloria offers to assist an embarrassed Whitney with her personal style. Cam seems unconcerned by Jay's behavior, though Mitch is still hurt by his father's discomfort, and Gloria encourages Jay to reach out to Shorty and support him as she is doing for Whitney.

Phil arrives home to find that Claire has destroyed the remote in a fit of anger, and he vows that he will replace it and teach "their dumbest kid," Haley, to use it to prove that Claire is the one with the problem. Cam buys flowers for Gloria and then goes to great lengths to replace them when they briefly wilt, and Jay calls Shorty for a golf game and gently urges him to reveal his secret, promising that he will understand. Shorty, however, reveals that he is actually in debt to a bookie, and is relieved at Jay's "offer" to give him the necessary money. Claire is frustrated when Haley proves her technological abilities, and Mitch admits to Jay that he lied about Shorty to prove a point to him, impressed with Jay's open-minded, if misguided, attitude about his friend. Cameron arrives at Gloria's with the flowers and compliments the made-over Whitney, prompting her to gush that he may be "the one." Mitch concedes that people can change their ways by perhaps "fifteen percent," and Claire recruits Haley to teach her about the remote control. Later, Jay is again confused by Shorty's unusual personal tastes. Includes commercials and promos.
