GREY'S ANATOMY: WHITE WEDDING (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Arizona and Callie grapple with the arrival of their respective parents for their upcoming wedding, and the other residents are annoyed with Alex's project involving needy African orphans, sure that he will pull into the lead in the competition for chief resident. Derek meets Zola, an adorable infant with spina bifida, and Arizona prepares to treat Kondo, a young boy whose heart is nearly outside of his body. Cristina, desperate to reenter the race after being "benched" by a resentful Teddy, awkwardly apologizes for overriding her during Callie's life-saving surgery, but Teddy is unmoved. Stark, April and Owen treat a young girl named Asha, who is HIV-positive and appears frightened of the doctors, and no one is thrilled when "The Colonel," Arizona's father, comes up with a strict schedule for the wedding process.

Jackson grows exasperated with his boring project, which largely involved looking after mice, and Lexie carefully prepares for Kondo's delicate surgery. Teddy confesses to Owen that she is close to "buckling" with Cristina because of her expertise, but also wishes her to learn a hard lesson about humility. Alex correctly guesses that Meredith has tampered with the Alzheimer's trial and warns her that the entire hospital could be blacklisted if her actions are discovered, though she continues feigning ignorance. Stark is dismissive of April's concerns over Asha's emotional state, but the girl is then rushed into emergency surgery and discovered to have a very rare case of intestinal tuberculosis. Alex and Derek apply a shunt to relieve Zola's hydrocephalus, and Arizona teases Teddy about her boyfriend Andrew, wondering if he knows about her "husband" Henry. Jackson panics when "Mouse J" appears ill, and Callie's mother Lucia finally admits that she cannot accept Callie's "bastard" child and her marriage to a woman, feeling that she has violated sacred law.

Arizona comforts Kondo's worried brother Sefu as April cooks nsima, a traditional African porridge dish, for Asha, defiantly informing Stark that she intends to ease the girl's suffering however she can. A heartbroken Callie urges Carlos to leave with Lucia and, learning that the minister is now unavailable, declares the wedding cancelled. Richard is impressed when Jackson conducts extensive tests on Mouse J and successfully repairs the problem with the islet cell device, and Meredith is startled when Derek suggests that they adopt Zola. Bailey visits Callie and reminds her that "church can be anywhere," as God is everywhere, and assures her that her commitment to Arizona is meaningful even if Lucia cannot accept their love. Teddy continues snubbing Cristina in the OR as Stark uncharacteristically recommends April for chief resident, telling Owen of her "above and beyond" care for patients. Mark comforts Arizona as she takes a moment to mourn her late brother Timothy, who had looked forward to attending her wedding, and he walks Callie down the aisle as Bailey performs the ceremony – just as Meredith and Derek are also wed in a quickie courthouse ceremony, in order to facilitate Zola's adoption. At the reception, Cristina finally calls Teddy out on her inappropriate behavior, pointing out that she in fact saved Callie's life, but Teddy maintains that she "still doesn't get it." Teddy is stunned when Andrew tells her that he has accepted a prestigious job in Germany and wishes her to accompany him there, and Meredith and Derek share some happy private time with their soon-to-be daughter as Carlos decides to defy his wife's views and returns to the reception for a sweet father-daughter dance with Callie.
