REVENGE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic television series about a young woman moving into the Hamptons as part of a scheme against the rich family who imprisoned her father.
At an engagement party for Emily Thorne and Daniel Grayson in Southampton, NY, Daniel is shot dead and his body deposited on a beach. The story turns back to five months earlier, when Emily rents a beachfront house next door to the Graysons. Emily was once known as “Amanda Clarke,” the daughter of David Clarke, a business partner of the Graysons. The Grayson family sent him to prison when Amanda was a little girl under false accusations. Years have passed and the grown-up Amanada, now calling herself “Emily,” wants revenge. Emily’s friend Ashley is handling the guest list for a big Memorial Day party thrown by Victoria Grayson, matriarch of the Grayson family and a big name in Southampton. Emily signs up to attend the party.
Victoria plans her party with her friends. Among them is her best friend Lydia Davis, who once owned the house Emily is renting but gave it up when she discovered her husband was having an affair. Meanwhile, Nolan Ross, a rich Hamptonite, asks Jack Porter, whose father owns a local bar, if he can buy his boat, but Jack won’t part with it. Emily meets Lydia on the beach; unbeknownst to anyone, Emily has photographic evidence of an affair between Lydia and Victoria’s husband Conrad Grayson. Daniel Grayson returns from university, greeted by his family. Conrad is in bed with Lydia at a local inn. He gets up from the bed but suddenly doubles over in pain, causing Lydia great concern. He is taken to the hospital; Emily shows up outside the ambulance, forcing Lydia to turn away.
Emily remembers meeting Jack as a kid; the two of them meet again but he doesn’t recognize her. Victoria visits Conrad in the hospital and figures out that he is having an affair, warning him not to continue. Emily and Ashley attend the Grayson’s party, where Ashley helps Emily take note of the various influential figures there. She tells her that Daniel was in a drunk-driving accident which cost the life of a waitress he was sleeping with; the Graysons paid to have the matter covered up. They talk to Victoria and Lydia; Emily’s dialogue surreptitiously allows Victoria to determine that Lydia is the woman her husband was having an affair with.
Jack’s father’s bar is about to be foreclosed by the bank, and Jack is desperate to help his father keep his bar. Emily engineers an “accidental” meeting with Daniel and they seem to hit it off. Victoria makes an announcement at the party, Lydia is the winner of her art auction, but she is giving her back the Van Gogh painting she gave her as a veiled insult. She also announces that Lydia is putting her house back on the market, essentially banishing her from the Hamptons. Emily remembers that it was Victoria who betrayed her father and had both of them taken away.
Daniel and Emily talk to each other alone for a while. He claims that he no longer drinks alcohol. Victoria picks Daniel up, acting somewhat cold towards Emily. That night, Victoria and Conrad argue about his affair and what they did to David years ago. Nolan reviews his video footage of the party, including Emily meeting Daniel. Jack calls him, telling him he’s changed his mind and will sell his boat so he can help his father. Nolan follows Emily home; he recognizes her as Amanda and is privy to the true details of her father’s arrest. He offers his help in her scheme, but she won’t let him. He leaves, stating that Jack still carries a torch for “Amanda.”
Emily recalls being let out of juvenile prison after ten years and meeting Nolan. Nolan tells her that her father has recently passed away. He gives her a lockbox he willed to her; David was the first to invest in Nolan’s company and in accordance with his wishes Emily owns nearly half of it now. Her father also left her a series of journals detailing his feelings about the situation, asking her to forgive those who caused the whole thing. However, Emily remarks to herself that she is incapable of forgiveness and can only seek revenge. It turns out that Emily disguised herself as a waitress and poisoned Conrad’s bisque, causing his trip to the hospital. It also appears that Victoria was at one point in love with David. The episode ends as Victoria calls for a background check on Emily. Commercials deleted.
