DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES: THE BEST THING THAT EVER COULD HAVE HAPPENED (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comedic soap opera about the denizens of Wisteria Lane, a suburban neighborhood with a seedy underbelly that is thrust to the forefront after the suicide of one titular housewife. In this episode, handyman Eli Scruggs is called down from Susan's roof as Karen berates him for announcing his retirement. He confirms that he has a bad heart and is about to take off for Waikiki. As he returns to the roof and finishes his last repair, Eli has a fatal heart attack. Later, as she plays poker with Susan, Bree, and Lynette, Gaby recalls how Eli helped Gaby make friends after first moving into the neighborhood: encouraging her to drop her superior attitude, deal with Carlos, and reach out to her neighbors. Next, Bree thinks back to when Eli encouraged her to defy Rex and follow her dream to write a cookbook. Later, Edie is told by Dave about Eli's death. Suddenly, Edie remembers how Eli restored her self-confidence after Umberto stopped having sex with her, culminating in a bedroom romp with Eli. That night, Lynette recollects how she tried to find time for newborn Penny while trying to handle Tom's demands and a new job: a balancing act in which Eli assisted her. Finally, Susan pours herself a glass of wine and daydreams back to when Eli helped her work through her divorce from the philandering Karl, then Mike, and her breakup with Jackson. At Eli's funeral, all the Wisteria Lane residents show up and pay their respects. Then, the late Mary Alice has a reverie in which she reveals that she gave Eli his start on Wisteria Lane, culminating in an encounter between them that led to her death -- and gave Eli his life's inspiration.
