GREY'S ANATOMY: SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Bailey grows anxious about her long-term pediatric patient Jackson, who is in desperate need of several organ transplants. Derek informs William Dunn that his brain contusions are expanding and require surgery, though Dunn points out the irony of saving his life when he is set to be executed within days. Sloan and Meredith panic upon learning that Derek's mother is coming to town, both sure that she will disapprove of them, and Izzie struggles with Denny's continued presence as she tries to advise Meredith on being more likable. Derek orders Meredith and Cristina to monitor Dunn and rush him into surgery when needed, refusing to let him "cheat the system" by dying naturally, and Callie deals with a diminutive patient, Chuck, who had dangerous leg-lengthening surgery overseas. Bailey informs Sadie that she does not trust her and will not allow her to interfere with Jackson's case, and when Dunn spots Jackson in the elevator, he offers to give him his organs. Meredith nervously assumes a chipper demeanor as she greets Carolyn Shepherd, and Cristina is taken back when Owen suddenly asks her on a date.
Bailey informs Jackson that taking Dunn's organs would be "against the rules," though Dunn tells Meredith that it is "the least he can do" before dying. Chuck is distressed to learn that he will not achieve his desired extra two inches because of the infection, angrily complaining that his life has been negatively affected by his height. Alex learns that organs have been found for Jackson, and once on the plane Arizona cheerfully questions him about Izzie, though he states that he "doesn't make plans." Meredith awkwardly avoids Carolyn's questions about her family, and Carolyn observes that Derek is bothered by having to treat a killer. Sloan is embarrassed when Lexie sits with him at lunch and admits his affair with her to Carolyn, his surrogate mother, ashamed at their significant age difference. Dunn asks Meredith's medical opinion on execution methods and she replies frankly, then telling him that he is indeed a blood match for Jackson. Carolyn interrogates an extremely uncomfortable Lexie, and during Chuck's surgery Callie tells Mark that she too feels "shorter" after her heartbreaking experiences with George and Erica. Alex snaps at Arizona on the flight home, angry that she is seemingly unaffected by the donor child's death, but she counters that she must distract herself with positive thoughts and think to the future to avoid dwelling on the "tiny coffins."
Carolyn meets Owen and seems to immediately pick up on his ongoing sense of trauma from the war, and Cristina takes Izzie's advice and abruptly asks him about his best surgery. Sadie spots a serious problem during Jackson's surgery, and Bailey is heartbroken to realize that the organs are useless and Jackson will need new ones within twenty-four hours. Derek ignores Dunn's pleas and orders Cristina to scrub in on his surgery when Meredith hesitates, and Carolyn offers her stern approval of Mark's affair with Lexie, pointing out that he "needs younger." Chuck's brother Gary finally yells at him that his true problem is his insecurity, not his height, and Derek is furious when Dunn suggests that they are alike because of their power over others' lives. Meredith admits to Carolyn that she is a "fraud" and feels somewhat sorry for Dunn, and Izzie finally "breaks up" with Denny, aware that what they have is not truly real. Sloan advises Callie to "walk tall" despite her humiliations, and Cristina is troubled when Owen arrives late for their date and drunkenly tells her about his "best surgery," in which he saved a fellow soldier with grievous injuries, only to have the man later thank him and then commit suicide. Carolyn informs Derek that Meredith is "the one" because she complements his "black and white" nature, adding that she herself is no longer angry about her husband's murder. Izzie enjoys an evening with Alex, though Denny remains "with" them, and upon learning of Jackson's condition, Meredith pointedly tells Dunn that he must avoid re-injuring his surgical site or risk brain death, prompting him to do just the opposite.
