UGLY BETTY: THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT {PARTS 1 AND 2} {FOURTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy-drama series about Betty Suarez, a young Queens woman trying to make it in the fashion industry despite her unglamorous appearance.

In this double-episode, Betty readies for her first day as an associate features editor at Mode, as Justin prepares to enter his freshman year of high school. After getting a surprise package from Christina, Betty immediately comes up against resentment from co-workers, particularly jealousy-driven Marc, competitive editor and office-mate Megan, and Matt, who has become a no-nonsense managing editor. At his first staff meeting, Matt is particularly dismissive of Betty as he makes their personal problems into professional ones. Justin fares no better, as he is immediately bullied and laughed at by fellow students. Elsewhere, Suzuki reports on Daniel's trip to Tibet, where he went to spread Molly's ashes. Suzuki also references the growing tension at Mode between Claire and Wilhelmina. Betty is counseled by Wilhelmina in the steam room that she best adopt a tough facade. Upon returning home, Hilda, Archie, and Ignacio offer differing advice to Betty on how to proceed.

The next day, Wilhelmina is surprised when Cal and Claire assure her that they want her to stay at Mode. Also at Mode, Justin goes to see Marc for advice about the bullies. Betty reports on the Justin-Marc alliance to Hilda, and Marc soon has a visit from Hilda, who tells him to stay away from Justin. Meanwhile, Betty's attempts to bake muffins for the office go badly when Marc has an allergic reaction to the muffins' walnuts, sending him to the hospital. Betty later follows up on Claire's advice and tracks down Matt outside the office. She tries to reason with him, after which she grabs him for a passionate kiss. However, Matt pulls away and says that they now only have a working relationship, despite her repeated apologies for what happened with Henry. Across town, Marc goes to Wilhelmina's apartment, having become curious about Wilhelmina's elusive behavior and thinking that she was hiding Connor. There, he finds her daughter, Nico. When Wilhelmina arrives home, she explains why she kept Marc in the dark, but later assures Nico that she won't disclose her secret.

Elsewhere, Daniel is detained at the airport after having been mistaken for a terrorist. Betty rescues him, and realizes that he is still in mourning for Molly, which has resulted in anger issues. Daniel then helps Betty track down the eccentric Olivia Gillemette, whose insect-based jewelry creations make her perfect for a Mode feature. Upon meeting Olivia, Betty and she bond over the surfeit of butterflies in Olivia's apartment. When Betty returns to the office and offers to help Megan write a story on Olivia, Megan initially reacts with suspicion, then changes her tune. Matt also begins to thaw, at least until Daniel holds a staff meeting where he lauds Betty's efforts and criticizes Matt and Megan. In another part of the building, Justin is appalled when Marc tells him that Hilda has forbidden them to talk.

At a subsequent Mode pitch meeting, Betty comes up with a winning idea for a photo spread at the United Nations, much to Wilhelmina's surprise. Wilhelmina is equally surprised when Detective Oscar Castelar questions her about the fate of Nico's recent boyfriend. Oscar insists on questioning Nico the following day. Wilhelmina then assures Nico that they will make up an alibi, despite the fact that Nico admits to having pushed her lover overboard on a yacht after he became abusive with her. Elsewhere, Betty realizes that Daniel's anger issues are getting out of control. She then offers to stay at Molly's apartment with him, despite the fact that she was scheduled to supervise a late-night work session concerning the U.N. photo shoot. Betty awakens late the next morning and rushes to the U.N., where Matt, Megan, and other staffers remain angry that they had to do all the work. Worse, Betty's absence has resulted in chaos at the shoot. Wilhelmina ultimately takes control, ordering Betty and Daniel to leave after Daniel punches Matt for insulting Betty.

Back at the office, Amanda finds herself bonding with Helen, an older temp who used to be a receptionist, and still finds satisfaction in partying every night. However, after Helen's conduct gets her fired, Amanda realizes that she could all too easily fall into Helen's increasingly sad lifestyle. Back in Queens, Ignacio advises Hilda on how to deal with Justin. Hilda then returns to Mode and asks Marc if he will continue to counsel Justin. Meanwhile, Wilhelmina and Nico meet with Oscar, fabricating an elaborate story while individually recollecting how they went to the yacht together and cleaned up evidence of Nico's involvement. However, neither realizes that some evidence was left behind. The next morning, Betty tries out a new look at work, sporting a different hairstyle, glasses, and a sedate outfit. After having another meeting with Matt in which she states that it's time for them both to move on, Betty finally finds herself fitting in at Mode. Includes commercials.
