UGLY BETTY: CURVEBALL / THE FALL ISSUE {THIRD SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy-drama series about Betty Suarez, a young Queens woman trying to make it in the fashion industry despite her unglamorous appearance.
In this double episode, Suzuki reports on Molly finally leaving the hospital after collapsing on her wedding night, as well as Daniel having straightened out his life because of her. In Queens, Betty preps for her YETI interviews, encouraged by the fact that Jodie agreed to become her mentor. She's momentarily distracted, then distressed, after Matt shows her the painting he made of her. Later, Betty tells Ignacio, Hilda, and Justin that Matt asked her to move in with him, and that she's going to do it. Surprised by Ignacio's support, Betty assumes that her life is working out, until unexpectedly seeing Henry on the street. At Mode, Wilhelmina fumes to Marc about Claire having been promoted by Cal to senior vice president. When she observes Claire having an icy meeting with Victoria, Wilhelmina determines to discover the cause of their bad blood. Meanwhile, Cal tries to exploit Daniel and Molly's newfound popularity to bolster Mode's subscription rates.
The next day, Daniel is a guest on "The View," where the hosts pepper him with questions about his personal life rather than discussing Mode's upcoming wedding issue. Across town, Marc gets Wilhelmina into Victoria's tennis club, where she arranges to run into Victoria. After allowing herself to be beaten at tennis, the two go drinking. Wilhelmina manipulates the conversation to Claire, at which point Victoria discloses that Claire was once pregnant with Cal's child, despite the fact that they were both married at the time. Elsewhere, Betty and Marc successfully complete their YETI interviews, after which they not only run into Henry on the street, but meet his girlfriend, Chloe. Thanks to Marc and Amanda's maneuvering, Betty and Matt end up seated next to Henry and Chloe at a Mets game that night. There, the interplay is awkward, though Betty is pleased to reveal that, thanks to YETI, she now has a chance for an editor's job at the New York Review. Matt ultimately feels overshadowed by Henry. Back in Queens, Hilda advises Betty not to see Henry again.
After Daniel lashes out at Molly for trying to match him up with women to date after she dies, Molly admits that she's simply afraid of being forgotten. He manages to cheer her up by showing her the Mode wedding issue's cover, which features Molly in her bridal gown. Across town, Betty encourages Marc to follow up on his Vogue interview, after which he lands an editor's job there. Taking her own advice, Betty calls the New York Review and discovers that Jodie has taken the editor's job there for herself. After being confronted by Betty, Jodie makes excuses for her actions, including being jilted by Marc. Betty remains disgusted and walks out. When Betty calls Henry for solace, she admits that he is her first love and that she'll always be drawn to him. The two then kiss, not knowing that Matt is watching silently from the shadows.
The next day, Betty tells Hilda that she's going to come clean with Matt about what she did, though Hilda advises her to keep silent. They are interrupted by Justin, who remains hopeful about his application for admittance to a local performing arts school. At Mode, celebrations begin after Daniel and Wilhelmina are nominated for a Magazine and Media Association (MAMA) award for the wedding issue. As Claire deals with the press, Wilhelmina lets her know that her long ago relationship with Cal is about to be revealed. Meanwhile, Betty trades barbs with unpleasant editor Penny Meadows, whose article on Yves St. Laurent is long overdue for publication. Just after Betty leaves Penny's apartment, the inebriated Penny falls to her death from her balcony. Back at the office, Amanda tries to sabotage Marc's replacement, Ryan, while Claire tells Wilhelmina that she aborted Cal's child. Wilhelmina then vows to pass that information on to Cal if Claire won't leave the company.
As Wilhelmina and Marc gleefully review their dastardly deeds over the years, Wilhelmina admits that she will miss him once he leaves for Vogue. She then suggests that he take Penny's position at Mode and turn down the Vogue slot. However, Daniel has made the same proposal to Betty. Wilhelmina and Daniel then tell Betty and Marc that whomever can complete Penny's story on St. Laurent will get the job. Betty and Marc both head to Penny's apartment, where they run into Penny's enraged twin, Mindy. Upon finding her sister's notes on St. Laurent, Mindy throws the pages out the window, dashing Betty and Marc's chances to finish the article. They then threaten to resign from Mode if Wilhelmina and Marc can't choose between them.
Justin reacts badly upon receiving a letter stating that he didn't get into the performing arts school. Archie tries to comfort him to no avail, though Betty suggests that he be her date at that night's MAMA awards. Later, after multiple attempts to get Betty to confess her actions with Henry, Matt admits that he saw them kissing and that she lied about it. Betty later tries to apologize outside his apartment building, but Matt says that he can no longer trust her. Elsewhere, Molly's fever returns and she tells Daniel that she'll meet him at the awards show. There, Cal and Matt run into each other, at which point Matt tells his father what happened with Betty. Across the room, Justin gets cornered as well, with Marc telling him to accept his fate and form his own niche in the public school system. And Daniel and Wilhelmina also chat, deciding on a coin toss as the only fair way to determine whether Marc or Betty gets the features editor position.
Betty is delighted when Daniel informs her that she won. Daniel and Wilhelmina also emerge victorious when the wedding issue earns an award. Daniel makes an eloquent speech, inspired by a vision of Molly nearby. However, he soon discovers that Molly never showed up. Claire then confronts Wilhelmina, stating that she told Cal everything, and that, as a result, they are now evaluating Wilhelmina's future at Mode. Later, Claire goes to her apartment and burns a mysterious adoption certificate. Wilhelmina's night also continues, as she meets with a bounty hunter who has been assigned to find Connor and retrieve the stolen funds so that she can buy out Cal's shares of Meade Enterprises. When Wilhelmina then walks into another part of her apartment, she comes face to face with a surprise visitor. In her new Mode office, Betty is forced to deal with Matt. He says that they are finished as a couple, but -- thanks to Cal's offer earlier that night -- he will be her new boss. Finally, Daniel gets back to his apartment in time to see Molly's lifeless body carried out by paramedics. He immediately calls Betty and she arrives just as Daniel falls to pieces.
