CASTLE: HOME IS WHERE THE HEART STOPS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy-drama series about a New York Police Department detective who grudgingly lets a rugged mystery-books author help solve murder cases. In this episode, a woman is found murdered and stuffed into her wall safe, and the detectives immediately surmise that it is part of a series of escalating home invasion/robberies in which expensive jewelry has been taken. The woman's daughter, Joanne, states that she does not know the other victims, and Kate, whose mother was also murdered, forms an emotional connection with her as she swears to find the killer. Esposito and Ryan determine that the perp used a bump key to enter the apartments, and they soon pick up notorious robber Evan Mitchell, recently out of prison and known for using such devices. Mitchell denies everything and provides an alibi, however, and despite Beckett's suspicions Montgomery declares him a dead end. Castle visits Beckett at the gun range and tricks her into giving him the case files, and when he observes that the robber will need a high-end fence to sell the jewelry, Martha reminds him about Caine Powell, a former flame who threatened Castle's life after he used him as inspiration for a character.
Powell gives Castle a less-than-friendly greeting but then agrees to assist with the case and, upon visiting the crime scene, notes that putting the victim in the safe was "unnecessary" and that the criminals violated the unspoken robbers' "code of conduct" with their cruelty. Beckett is annoyed to find them there, but Castle sits down with Mitchell again and, pretending to need details for an upcoming book, questions him about the man who requested the bump key and attempted to recruit him into a crew. Mitchell provides a sketch of the "sadistic" man, and when Joanne mentions that her mother often attended pricey charity functions, the detectives guess that the killer has been choosing his victims from among the well-dressed attendees at such events. Finding that all of the victims supported the Metropolitan American Dance Theatre, Beckett and Castle question the company director, Anne Green, though she refuses to hand over the donor list without a court order. Castle, however, invites Beckett to attend the next event with him, sure that they can catch the criminal in person.
Castle is impressed by Beckett's black-tie wear, and once at the party she is surprised to learn that he has mentioned her to the mayor, with whom he is on friendly terms. Castle meets Rachel Maddox, to whom he exchanged a signed book for the event tickets, and her boyfriend Paul, while elsewhere Beckett learns that Castle is in high demand among the society-set ladies. Castle then realizes that Powell is there as well and guesses that he and Anne are in on the robberies together, but Martha then appears onstage and auctions off an "enchanting" evening with Castle himself, and he realizes that Powell's revenge is not of the violent variety. He then spots Paul photographing the crowd, and when Esposito and Ryan determine that he has a long rap sheet under another name, they quickly realize that he is involved with the robberies. He explains that he was forced into it by his former cellmate Karl because of his relationship with Rachel, however, and the detectives hurry to arrest the true killer. Castle ends up fighting with him despite Beckett's orders to stay out of the way, but they manage to arrest him and Beckett soon visits Joanne again, offering her some kind advice about making peace with her mother's death. Later, she heads to the Castles' home for and relates the story of the case. Includes commercials and promos.
