PRIVATE PRACTICE: A DEATH IN THE FAMILY {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The third season premiere in this medical drama series spun off from "Grey’s Anatomy" that chronicles the lives of Dr. Addison Montgomery and her friends and fellow doctors at Oceanside Wellness Group in Los Angeles. In this episode, Pete attends a funeral with Naomi and Sam, while at another time he is horrified to find Violet attacked and bleeding in her home with her unborn child missing. She is rushed into the hospital and Addison begins to operate, and in a flashback Cooper and Violet move into their new office, unnerved by their bosses' happy marriage. Violet then meets her new patient, Pete, whose wife died quite suddenly, and he admits that he finds therapy "artificial" and unhelpful. In the present, the doctors inform the cops that disturbed patient Katie is likely Violet's attacker, and Sheldon arrives in a panic, declaring that he is "also" the father of her baby. A distraught Cooper blames himself, as he was nearby during the attack, but Charlotte firmly tells him that only Katie is at fault. Tensions flare between Pete and Sheldon as Naomi and Addison operate, and Dell tries to comfort the unconscious Violet, begging her not to die. In the past, the doctors debate hiring Pete to their new clinic, though Violet objects, pointing out that he is her patient and has not yet dealt with his issues.
Sheldon debates the power of faith, and Addison considers performing a hysterectomy to save Violet's life. Naomi objects, saying that her baby might already be dead and she should have the chance for another, but Pete demands that they save her at all costs. Addison finally asks Cooper, who knows her best, and he tells them to try to save her reproductive organs. In the past, Pete returns informs Violet that she cannot "figure him out," adding that she is unqualified to judge him because she is unmarried. Katie arrives at the hospital with "her" newborn, really Violet's, and Cooper carefully plays along and casually asks to inspect the baby. Katie hands him over and is quickly arrested, and they soon discover that the baby too needs surgery. Addison decides to work on the infant, tasking Naomi with finishing Violet's operation. In the flashback, Pete tells Sam that he is uncomfortable with Violet and is through with her therapy, but Sam suggests that he is merely unlucky. Violet crashes and Naomi struggles to save her, and Addison ends up performing a risky procedure on her while simultaneously trying to save her son. Pete returns to Violet and admits that he and his wife had another one of their many fights the night before she died and that he then found her dead in the morning, confessing that he hated her and can "breathe again" now that she is gone.
Violet survives her surgery, though barely, and in the past, she declares that they should hire Pete after all. Naomi and Addison argue about the case, with Addison angrily pointing out that Naomi quit the practice and left her, but Naomi comforts her friend and tells her that she is not alone. Sam worries that Pete could experience another profound loss if Violet dies, and the funeral is revealed to be his wife's, with Violet by his side. Dell admits his fears of single fatherhood to Cooper, and Pete and Sheldon sit by "their" son, united in their worries for Violet. In the past, Pete moves in to the clinic and declares that he may change his focus from infectious diseases to alternative medicine, and Violet tells him that he simply married the wrong person and will someday find real love. In the present, Violet finally wakes up, and is greatly relieved to meet her son. Includes commercials and promos.
