RAISING HOPE: DON'T VOTE FOR THIS EPISODE {SEASON ONE FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series about a clueless 23-year-old raising his infant daughter with the help—and hindrance—of his eccentric family. Jimmy talks about his upcoming birthday, which he shares every year with Maw Maw. He recounts the events of five years ago, just before his eighteenth birthday. At that point, he was going through a gothic clown phase, wearing dark clothing, makeup, and insisting on being referred to as “Drakkar Noir,” much to his families’ consternation. As a “birthday surprise,” Maw Maw throws Burt, Virginia, and Jimmy out of the house, glad to be rid of them. They are forced to find a way to live on their own. They go to the grocery store and covertly steal food while Sabrina applies for a job there. Later, Virginia returns from work and says her boss will allow them to stay in the basement, but only if Jimmy discards his frightening garb. He refuses and they angrily part ways. Jimmy hides himself in the grocery store and stays there after hours. Meanwhile, Sabrina is developing a crush on him. Virginia and Burt have difficulty adjusting to their new home. They plead with Maw Maw to let them back in, but she refuses, calling them “losers.” This spurs them into trying to improve their current situation, saving up a little money to pay Maw Maw back for letting them live in her house for so many years. Meanwhile, the grocery store employees are catching on to Jimmy’s surreptitious presence. When Virginia and Burt return to Maw Maw’s house to pay her back, she seems addled, believing her dead husband is still alive. It soon becomes evident that she is suffering from memory loss and dementia. Virginia wants to move back in, for Maw Maw’s sake as much as her own. Burt agrees and the three of them reconcile. Jimmy is caught and is forced to flee from the grocery store. Sabrina finally gets the courage to approach him, but by then he is already gone and she gets discouraged. Jimmy runs back home and Burt hides him from the police. They both admit that they have some growing up to do; Jimmy discards his makeup and costume. The episode ends in the present day as Jimmy and Maw Maw celebrate at their birthday party. Commercials deleted.
