HOT IN CLEVELAND: HOW I MET MY MOTHER (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about three middle-aged west-coast women living in Cleveland with their cantankerous caretaker. Victoria reveals that ten years ago she, using Joy’s name, maintained a correspondence with a prison inmate named Gary. They became close to one another, but Victoria rejected his marriage proposal and he threatened her (Joy’s) life. Gary has just been paroled, making everyone quite nervous. When a mysterious telephone caller asks for Joy and abruptly hangs up, they panic and take measures to secure the house. Later, as they creep around the house at night, Elka’s rifle accidentally goes off and shoots through the window. A man outside with a gunshot wound in his leg claims to be Owen, Joy’s son she gave up for adoption when she was a teenager. When he asks for Joy, she gets nervous and points to Melanie just before he passes out. As they wait for the paramedics, Joy confides that she’s not comfortable about this meeting and imagined it would be different. Owen awakens and Joy and the others carry on their pretense briefly before Joy confesses her identity. A man comes to the house to install a new alarm system while Joy is at the hospital with Owen. Melanie soon discovers that the man is actually Gary looking for Joy; he traps her, Elka, and Victoria inside the house before they can alert anyone. Meanwhile, Owen awakens with Joy by his side and he explains his initial reluctance to contact her. In light of recent events, he doesn’t want to pursue a relationship, upsetting Joy. Gary reveals that his crime was not as gruesome as they had imagined (he was convicted of smuggling auto parts). Victoria confesses to posing as Joy and Gary is crestfallen. Joy returns home to find the other ladies comforting him. When Gary confronts Joy about his shattered expectations, Joy realizes that her expectations of Owen were clouding her judgment and immediately returns to the hospital. Joy arrives at the hospital just as Owen is leaving and stops him. She tells him that their meeting couldn’t possibly have gone as either of them had intended, but that they need to talk regardless. They sit down and have a discussion; Joy finds out that Owen was married but is now divorced, and that he works as an actuary. Owen asks why she gave him up, and she explains that she wanted him to have a good life so that they would one day be able to meet. Owen seems to accept this and they hug. Commercials deleted.
