BROTHERS & SISTERS: LIGHTS OUT (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about the California-based Walker family, an adult clan of siblings trying to live up to their parents' lofty expectations after the death of the family patriarch.

In this episode, Paige records video tributes from Sarah, Kevin, Saul, and Holly as they reflect on their days working at Ojai. As Tommy, Rebecca, and Holly watch, Sarah then announces to the company's staff that Ojai is about to close. In a follow-up closed-door meeting, Tommy addresses liquidation as Saul debates Sarah's ability to get equity out of the company; Holly worries about benefits for the soon-to-be-unemployed staffers. Nora shows the facility to Benjamin Wright, a prospective buyer for the property, until she discovers that he intends to raze the building. She sends him away and tells Sarah that she'll find someone that wants to preserve the edifice, feeling that it's part of the Walkers' legacy. Saul and Holly then reminisce about their platonic romance as Holly preps for a job interview at a competing food products firm. There, she's told that she's overqualified.

Meanwhile, Kitty rehearses for an appearance at the Goldrush political dinner while Kevin and Scotty debate her ability to tell jokes at the podium. In an adjoining room, Robert arranges to meet Bill Stanton, then lies about his rendezvous to Kevin. Kevin gets distracted as he tries in vain to find a job for Ojai worker Pedro, who laments the fates of his fellow Ojai employees. Later, Bill offers an institute-based position to Robert for a salary of seven million, after which Robert promises to "take care" of any committee members offering dissent. Elsewhere, Rebecca seeks employment opportunities while Justin proposes that they go to Haiti for a year, where he could continue medical studies and she might pursue photography. When Rebecca negates the idea, Justin takes offense.

After Luc fails to provide solace to Sarah, she makes a phone call to a competitor and gets jobs for Ojai staffers by "sweetening the deal" with three Ojai trucks worth $100,000. When Kevin hears of the arrangement, he and Tommy take Sarah to task, causing her to break down. A tearful Sarah seeks out Nora, stating that she's a failure and that the company's closure is her fault. Nora then tells about having asked former flame Roger Grant, the building's original architect, to purchase Ojai. She also admits having become angry upon hearing that Roger wants the building torn down. Nora brightens when a package arrives from Roger containing his early drawings of Ojai, after which Sarah finds William's plan to build a house for Nora at Narrow Lake. Sarah and Nora immediately question anew why Dennis York went to such extremes to purchase the Narrow Lake land.

Rebecca's excitement at having been hired for a food industry job sours upon learning that she beat out her mother for the position. Holly comforts her daughter, and says that Rebecca was a better fit. The two then head to Ojai, as do Kevin and Kitty after Kitty convinces Robert to take her place at the Goldrush dinner. There, Robert is cornered by Bill, who has realized that Robert is trying to set him up. Bill threatens to ruin Kitty's political future if Robert goes public with his findings. Back at Ojai, Justin is miffed when learning that Rebecca didn't tell him about her new job, saying that a distance is growing between them. When Sarah arrives, Kevin announces that he's solved the trucking issue by having Pedro start a business with the vehicles. Sarah then opens a bottle of William's cellared whiskey and -- as Scotty serenades them -- they all raise a glass to memories of Ojai before reluctantly shutting off the lights for the final time. Includes commercials.
