MY GENERATION: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this short-lived dramatic mockumentary television series following a group of people from Austin, Texas ten years after their high school graduation.
In the year 2000, nine seniors from Greenbelt High School in Austin, Texas were selected as subjects of a documentary. Ten years after their graduation, the documentary revisits them to see where life has taken them. Steven Foster, known in high school as an overachiever, is now a surfer in Hawaii who works at night as a bartender, seemingly content with his lot in life. One night, he receives a call from his old classmate Caroline Chung, described in high school as a “wallflower.” She had a one-night stand with Steven on their prom night, and calls to inform him that she became pregnant and had a child by him named Tom, who would like to meet him. Steven returns to Austin, but isn’t sure whether he wants to see Caroline and Tom or not.
Brenda Serrano, another graduate of the Class of 2000, now lives in Washington D.C., working as a lawyer for the leader of the House Finance Committee. In high school she had dreams of becoming a scientist, but after the contested outcome of the 2000 United States Presidential Election, she changed to pre-law and wound up working in politics. In high school she was the girlfriend of the local rich kid Anders Holt; both of them were deeply in love before they broke up for mysterious reasons pertaining to Anders’ family. Now Anders is married to Jackie Vachs, another Greenbelt alumnus, who was the high school’s beauty queen. Brenda and Anders still secretly harbor feelings for one another.
Kenneth Finley, a nerd in high school, now works as an elementary school teacher in Austin. In high school he dreamed of one day having children and starting a family, but hasn’t achieved that dream, although he seems to love his work. He is taking care of Dawn Barbuso, his former high school girlfriend, who is six months pregnant with the child of Rolly Marks, a classmate of theirs and Dawn’s husband. Rolly was a star basketball player in high school and college, but joined the army immediately after September 11th, 2001. Caroline’s son Tom is among Kenneth’s students and, during a parent-teacher conference with her, she reveals that Tom is Steven’s son. Steven and Kenneth were best friends during high school, but haven’t talked in years. Realizing he hasn’t followed his dream of starting a family, Kenneth visits the local sperm bank, but later is informed by them that he is infertile.
Steven is hesitant to meet with Caroline, possibly due to issues he has with his own father. He runs into Jackie and catches up with her. Later, he meets with Falcon, another Greenbelt alumnus who had dreams of becoming a rock star, and now works in New York City as a DJ and music producer. Meanwhile, Dawn talks to Rolly via webcam. Rolly is uncomfortable with Dawn staying with Kenneth and tries to persuade her to stay with Anders; he and Anders have been best friends since childhood. Dawn, however, still holds a grudge against Jackie and won’t go. Later, at Dawn’s baby shower, Falcon and Caroline talk about her baby and Steven, who hasn’t told Caroline that he’s arrived yet.
Later, Caroline and Tom run into an unsuspecting Steven, who botches his first meeting with the two of them. Caroline, flustered, drives away. Steven then runs into a depressed Kenneth at a local bar; Kenneth assaults him before leaving. The documentary explains that Steven was enrolled in Yale and at the top of his class until the 2001 Enron scandal, when his father, a high-ranking Enron executive, was arrested on counts of fraud and his family’s assets were frozen. Steven was forced to drop out of school. In 2004, Steven’s father was sentenced to six years in prison and Kenneth’s father, whose assets were also frozen in the scandal, committed suicide. Kenneth hasn’t spoken to Steven since; he blames Steven for his father’s suicide.
Kenneth returns home somewhat drunk and gives Dawn her baby shower present. She tells him she appreciates everything he’s done for her and tells him she’ll need his help raising her child, calling him “Uncle Kenneth.” Meanwhile, Steven, still out at the bar, meets with Jackie again and they talk. He has an epiphany and leaves a message on Caroline’s phone apologizing for his behavior and expressing his desire to act as a father for Tom. Commercials deleted.
