ACCORDING TO JIM: DIAMONDS ARE A GHOUL'S BEST FRIEND (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Jim, a construction business owner in Chicago, and his ongoing battles with his wife, three kids and in-laws.
It’s Cheryl’s birthday, and she is anxious to receive a present from Jim. She is disappointed when she discovers that it is a “coupon book” he devised himself for her to use to get him to perform simple tasks. Unwilling to accept this, she convinces herself that this is a fake-out and Jim has yet to give her a real present. He does nothing to dissuade her and tries to think of a more suitable present to get for her; he notes that his gifts used to be more heartfelt but now he doesn’t feel like putting in the effort. Andy suggests getting Cheryl some jewelry and says he can get it for Jim cheaply, and Jim agrees with this idea. Jim presents Cheryl with an antique diamond necklace and she is overjoyed. While Cheryl is upstairs trying it on, Andy runs in to tell Jim that the necklace was stolen out of a coffin at a funeral home. Jim is alarmed at this news but decides not to tell Cheryl, as it would mean depriving her of her gift.
When Cheryl returns she has somehow assumed the appearance of an elderly woman, much to Jim’s shock. She does not seem to notice anything different, and Jim tries not to let on that something odd is happening. He asks her to take off the necklace, and she reverts to her normal appearance. She quickly replaces the necklace and becomes an old woman once again, much to Jim’s distress. He tries to tell Andy about it, believing that the necklace is somehow haunted by the ghost of its former owner. Andy is convinced when Mandy turns into an obese man when she puts on another necklace he got for her. Jim and Andy try to convince themselves that they are both imagining things, but both Cheryl and Mandy continue to walk around in their transformed states despite their efforts. They decide to rip off the necklaces and run off, hastily explaining that they are haunted.
Jim and Andy find the still-living husband of the woman who previously owned Cheryl’s necklace, and they explain to him what happened. However, he refuses it since the diamonds are fake and it is a “cheap piece of crap.” Andy notices that the man’s attitude about “cutting corners” for getting his wife presents over the years is identical to Jim’s, although Jim claims that they are nothing alike. He is afraid of becoming embittered like the old man, and says that from now on he will put more care and thought into getting presents for Cheryl. Cheryl returns home to find Jim waiting for her, and she is quite upset with him. However, he presents her with actual diamond jewelry and apologizes to her, promising to put more effort into her gifts. Cheryl believes that the events of the past few days have been an elaborate scheme to give her the “best birthday ever,” and Jim does not dissuade her of this notion. Includes commercials.
