GREY'S ANATOMY: SANCTUARY / DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS {SIXTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The sixth season finale in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this two-part episode, Meredith happily reflects on her lifelong love of the hospital as she discovers that she is pregnant. Cristina is surprised but supportive, and Arizona prepares to perform an appendectomy on a young girl, Ruby, as Gary Clark, whose wife Alison died at the hospital some months ago, wanders the halls in search of the chief. Bailey's patient Mary learns that her intestinal surgery is again delayed, and a man, Pete, is brought into the ER, having been randomly shot by a fellow driver. When Reed responds brusquely to Clark's questions, he abruptly murders her and then shoots Alex as he approaches, implying that he was also Pete's assailant. Meredith prepares to tell Derek the good news as a resentful Cristina finally tells Owen that they are "done," while elsewhere April finds her best friend's dead body and panics, eventually managing to tell Derek what has happened. Cristina, unaware of the crisis, gives Clark directions in the elevator, and Richard, celebrating six months' sobriety, spots the police cars speeding towards the hospital. Callie and Arizona, still feuding, place the pediatrics ward on lockdown as ordered, and Derek orders Jackson not to tell Owen and Teddy about the shooter until Pete's surgery is complete.
Meredith and Cristina assume the lockdown is a mere drill, but Mark and Lexie narrowly avoid being shot as Clark opens fire in the lobby, and they soon encounter a seriously injured Alex in the elevator. SWAT teams descend on the hospital and Richard is barred from entering, and Derek finds Meredith and godmother-to-be Cristina casually wandering and quickly tells them of the danger. A terrified Bailey orders Percy to hide and Mary to play dead as Clark approaches, and he enters the room and shoots Percy when he confirms that he is a surgeon. Bailey desperately lies that she is a nurse, and Clark apologizes to her before leaving. Lexie and Mark frantically tend to Alex's gunshot wound as Callie and Arizona, trapped together with the children, continue feuding about their relationship and their incompatible feelings about motherhood. Bailey enlists Mary to help treat Percy, and Jackson finally tells Owen and Teddy about the shooter. Cristina spots Clark in the hallway and, remembering their encounter, realizes that he intends to kill Derek. Alex and Percy both worsen, though Bailey refuses to accept defeat, and Clark finally finds Derek on the catwalk and confronts him. Derek tries to apologize, revealing that his own father was murdered by a gunman, but Clark shoots him in full view of Cristina and a hysterical Meredith.
April, arriving on the catwalk, manages to talk her way out of being shot, and Meredith rushes to save her injured husband. Teddy tells Owen that he must choose between her and Cristina, and outside, Richard hears his doctors' frantic calls to the police. Alex, believing that he is dying, tries to offer Mark some sage advice, and Clark encounters Lexie, who turned off Alison's machines. As he prepares to kill her, however, he is shot in the shoulder by a police sniper, and Lexie flees back to Alex and professes her love for him. When Clark arrives in the peds wing, Callie calmly offers him a bandage and shares a moment with Arizona as they work together to comfort a frightened Ruby. Richard learns that the shooter is in fact Gary Clark as Bailey tries to save Percy, and Cristina, realizing that there are no other attendings around, decides that she herself must operate on Derek with Jackson's help and orders April to keep Meredith out of the OR. A delirious Alex mistakes Lexie for Izzie and expresses his love for her, and Owen and Teddy are finally evacuated by the SWAT team, but Owen makes his "choice" as he rushes back inside for Cristina. Meredith and Reed try to comfort one another as Cristina tries to master her emotions in order to save "her person's" husband, and Bailey, devastated to find that the elevators are shut off and cannot transport Percy to an OR, finally admits to him that he is dying.
Owen finds Cristina and Jackson working on Derek – held at gunpoint by Clark, who orders them to let him die. Meredith enters and tells Clark to shoot her, as she is emotionally connected to Alison's three "killers," Richard, Lexie and Derek, but Cristina frantically reveals that Meredith is pregnant. Clark shoots Owen, and Meredith collapses with grief as Jackson allows Derek to flatline – but when Clark leaves, he reattaches the wires, and Cristina begs Meredith to help "her guy" as she works on Derek. Percy asks Bailey to tell Reed of his love for her and that he "died brave" before passing away in Bailey's arms, and Meredith, tending to Owen's non-fatal wound, realizes that she is having a miscarriage. Richard enters the hospital against the cops' orders and finds Clark, who laughs at the irony as he reveals that he intended to end both of their lives, but has only one bullet left. Richard turns down Clark's offer of vodka and calmly tells him that he must choose between life in prison or reuniting with Alison, stating that he himself is no longer afraid to die. Cristina and Jackson complete Derek's surgery as Mary finally escapes and finds her husband, and Arizona, overwhelmed by the trauma, declares that she will have "ten kids" if Callie so wishes, and the two reunite. Richard emerges alone, revealing that Clark has killed himself, and Meredith heads to Derek's bedside, throwing out her positive pregnancy test as she goes. Includes commercials and promos.
