UGLY BETTY: HELLO GOODBYE {SERIES FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy-drama series about Betty Suarez, a young Queens woman trying to make it in the fashion industry despite her unglamorous appearance.

In this episode, Marc presides at the funeral of Amanda's beloved dog Halston, her last connection to Fey. Meanwhile, Wilhelmina remains in a coma after the shooting at Mode, with a distraught Marc remaining by her side. Her eyes open only when Connor appears, as he's arranged for a brief prison release. Elsewhere, Ignacio tells Betty that he has reservations about her having accepted an editing job in London. Hilda and Bobby make plans to get their own house, while Justin and his boyfriend Austin push for a move to Manhattan.

Back at Mode, Marc alerts the office that Betty has taken the London job, which ensures that Daniel learns the news before Betty could tell him. Daniel says he understands, but postpones signing the paperwork to let Betty out of her contract. Claire visits Wilhelmina in the hospital, offering money to say that Tyler had nothing to do with the shooting. An insulted Wilhelmina tears up the check, later telling Marc that her quest for revenge against the Meades has been renewed. Marc retorts that she'll always be unhappy, and he's tired of helping her.

When Betty asks Daniel about the paperwork, he says he's had second thoughts about letting her out of Mode's contract. Betty complains to Claire, who then asks Daniel if he feels romantically toward Betty. Ultimately, he offers Betty an editor's position, which she considers. Elsewhere, Marc reveals to Amanda that Spencer is her father, which sends her into a panic. Hilda and Bobby finally tell Ignacio about their plans to move into the city, causing Hilda to feel guilty.

The next day, Wilhelmina holds a news conference and convinces the reporters that she accidentally shot herself, much to Suzuki's dismay. As Tyler breathes a sigh of relief, Claire thanks Wilhelmina for lying and the two declare a detente. After Justin convinces Betty to go to London, she visits Daniel and he signs the paperwork to release her from Mode. Betty's going-away party also serves as a wake for the cremated Halston, thanks to Amanda. Spencer shows up to comfort Amanda and tells her that he knows that she is his daughter, causing the pair to embrace. Across the room, Justin pushes Marc to reunite with Troy, which he successfully does. As Betty tries to reach the missing Daniel, Wilhelmina tells her that she admires her courage. Betty says goodbye to Marc and Amanda as Daniel watches from afar. He tells Claire that he's letting Betty go, in every sense of the word.

After Daniel looks through the commemorative Mode edition, he tells Wilhelmina that he's resigning from the magazine and that she'll now be the sole editor. He says that Claire has given her blessing to the change and that he'll be "starting over." Back in Queens, Ignacio also gives blessings, telling Betty that she should move to London, and urges Hilda to move to Manhattan with Bobby and Justin. He says that he's happy to have the house to himself.

The next day, Wilhelmina promotes Marc before visiting Connor in prison. She tells Marc of her plan to get Connor's sentence drastically reduced. Betty then bids a tearful farewell to Ignacio, Hilda, Bobby, Justin, and Austin. Upon resurfacing in London, Betty finds that she loves her new job as she negotiates her way around the city. Days later, she runs into Daniel in Trafalgar Square. He tells her that he left Mode and apologizes for not bidding her farewell. As he's staying in London for a while, Daniel makes plans for dinner that night with Betty, after which she confidently walks across the square and toward her future. Includes commercials.
