BLUE BLOODS: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere of this drama series about a multi-generational family of police officers in New York City. In this episode, the Reagan family prepares to attend the New York Police Academy graduation ceremony, where the clan's youngest son, Jamie, will officially become an officer. Jamie’s father, Frank, the Police Commissioner, makes a speech to the graduating class about their accomplishments and responsibilities. At the same time, elsewhere in the city, nine-year-old Teresa Campos is kidnapped as she heads home from school.
After the ceremony, Jamie's older brother, Danny, a detective, kids Jamie about having abandoned a law career and Harvard education to become a policeman, unlike his sister, Erin, who is an assistant district attorney. Grandfather Henry recalls how Jamie's older brother, Joe, also a cop, died in the line of duty.
Danny then receives a call about the missing girl and meets his partner, Demarcus, to head to the scene. They find a talking doll on the street where she was taken, but the toy doesn't belong to Teresa. They also learn that a white van with a broken window was seen driving erratically around the time of the disappearance. Teresa’s parents inform Danny and Demarcus that the girl has diabetes and could die within 24 hours without an insulin shot. Frank gives a press conference about the case and brusquely dismisses claims of a racist slant on the investigation. Later, the mayor warns him about his manner and the potential trouble of having his son leading the case.
Danny learns that there were no prints or DNA traces on the doll, which he finds suspicious. He soon discovers that it was a prototype doll, and only three people have one, including a U.N. delegate in Shanghai who has kept the toy out of the country. Upon finding that the second owner -- a doll magazine reviewer -- still has the toy, they chase down the third suspect, toy salesman Donald Banse, as time runs out.
They find Banse’s estranged wife, who tells them that her husband is living in a hotel downtown. There, they see a newly repainted van with a girl’s dress in the back. Upon locating Banse, Danny beats him until getting an admission about Teresa's kidnapping. Banse directs them to a storage locker, where they find and rescue Teresa. Elsewhere, Jamie officially begins his career as a policeman and works with a partner who knew Joe.
Over Erin's objections, Banse’s lawyer says that his client’s confession is inadmissible since it was obtained via Danny’s beating. The judge is forced to throw out the evidence, giving Erin and Danny the weekend to find proof of Banse’s guilt. Erin reprimands Danny for going off-book, but he maintains that the girl’s safety was paramount. Danny talks to Frank, who advises him on the issue and also suggests that he get help for issues stemming from his recent experience in Iraq.
Jamie goes to dinner with his lawyer girlfriend, Sydney, and Sydney admits that Joe's death makes her worry for Jamie's safety. He reassures her that he can handle the job. As they return to the restaurant, he sees Frank sharing a kiss with a woman in a cab.
The Reagans gather for their weekly family dinner at the request of Henry, but it devolves into an argument between Danny and Erin about the Banse case. Erin debates her father and grandfather -- a former police chief who couldn't "play politics" -- over the use of torture in extreme circumstances; Danny is called away to inspect evidence from a case in Florida, possibly involving Banse. Frank asks Jamie about an attractive co-worker, and Jamie in turn asks his father if he is seeing anyone. Frank avoids the question, saying he can't stop thinking of his deceased wife.
Later, Jamie is approached by two agents who tell him about a secret society within the NYPD called the Blue Templars. Jamie speculates that it is an urban legend, but they affirm that Templars has been connected with extortion and murder. Jamie remains skeptical until learning that Joe was working with the agents against the Templars, and that he may have been murdered when he was "fingered." They ask Jamie to help them from the inside, a proposal which he considers.
After receiving a thank-you cake from Teresa and her family, Danny re-examines the evidence and realizes that the murdered girl in Florida was wearing a necklace that Banse’s ex-wife was sporting when they talked to her. They return to her home and find that it has the same engraving. When a body is found in a Florida storage locker registered to Banse, the case is saved, much to Danny’s relief. Jamie meets Frank for early-morning fishing, and Frank admits that he is seeing someone, although he doesn't elaborate. In turn, the troubled Jamie doesn't bring up the Templars. Commercials deleted.
