DEXTER: THE BRITISH INVASION {SECOND SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The second season finale in this crime thriller series, based on the books by Jeff Lindsay, about a forensics expert for the Miami-Dade Police who also happens to be a serial killer targeting criminals that the police can't bring to justice. In this episode, Lila uses Dexter's GPS device and arrives at the cabin, where Doakes is still trapped. At home, Dexter feigns disinterest in capturing Doakes as Deb rushes out to catch him, but he then speeds towards the cabin, aware that his frame job will go awry if Doakes is found locked up. Doakes is stunned when Lila reacts to the news that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher with sympathy rather than horror, and she informs him that she is Dexter's "soulmate" before turning on the stove and the propane tank and departing. Doakes is killed in the ensuing explosion, and Dexter, arriving at the chaotic scene, is shocked to find that he has been saved by some "higher power." The cops begin to sort through the evidence – planted by Dexter – suggesting Doakes' guilt, and when a badly burned corpse is found in the lake, LaGuerta is distressed to learn that her friend is likely dead. Dexter decides to "honor" Doakes by embracing his freedom, and he happily reunites with Rita, observed by a contented Astor and Cody. Elsewhere, however, Lila obsesses over her portrait of Dexter.
Deb and Lundy consider a romantic getaway, now that the Bay Harbor Butcher case is nearly closed, and LaGuerta is heartbroken to learn from Lundy that the body has been officially identified as Doakes, with all of the evidence strongly indicating his guilt. Masuka states that the evidence points to suicide, though Dexter, aware that Doakes was locked up, finds the GPS device in the rubble and realizes that Lila was involved. He meets up with her, assuring her that he shares her sociopathic tendencies and is grateful for her help in freeing him by killing Doakes, and she is delighted when he suggests running away together, unaware that he intends to send her on a one-way solo trip. Batista, still smarting over the false rape accusation, is touched to learn that Deb has told Lila to get out of town, and when LaGuerta announces that she is holding a memorial for their "fallen" comrade, Deb realizes that she understands the pain of feeling deeply betrayed by a loved one and offers to contribute to the fund. Dexter, arriving at Lila's home to kill her, quickly makes excuses when he encounters Deb, and Lila is enraged to find that far from planning to run away with her, her "soulmate" was actually planning to make her his next victim.
Deb is crushed when Lundy is summoned back to D.C. on another case and resolves to accompany him, determined to maintain the relationship. Lila attacks Lexi and kidnaps Astor and Cody, and when a frantic Rita calls, Deb puts her trip on hold as she mobilizes the cops to track down her honorary niece and nephew. Dexter, however, immediately heads to Lila's home and find the kids there unharmed, but Lila sets fire to the place and locks the door. Dexter hurriedly helps the children escape through the window, but he is overcome with the smoke and recalls a moment with Harry in which he realizes that he would "always be like this." He manages to flee the burning apartment, though he tells a worried Deb that they will likely not be able to capture Lila now that she has evaded them. Dexter concludes that his narrow escape proves that he is meant to "keep doing what he's doing," and he catches up with Lila in Paris sometime later, thanking her for helping him to "accept what he is" before executing her. He attends Doakes' lonely funeral and, after purchasing a new box for his blood slides, returns to his life with Rita and the kids, deciding that he must continue to "evolve" within the Code.
