CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM: THE N WORD (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series in which producer/comedian Larry David plays a slightly exaggerated version of himself who often ends up embroiled in misunderstandings and social faux pas.

In this episode, Larry's innocent hug with houseguest Auntie Rae turns unintentionally inappropriate. As Jeff describes his upcoming nasal surgery over lunch, Larry suspects that their waitress has an anti-bald prejudice. Leon and Loretta are upset to hear that Larry has "stabbed" Auntie Rae; when he goes out on a date with the attractive Dr. Sheila Flomm, she reveals that she, too, has lingering houseguests: her brother and sister. She advises Larry on handling his embarrassing "groin issue," though Auntie Rae again misunderstands when she witnesses him applying a medical "massage." Sheila writes Larry a note, which he cannot read thanks to her typical doctor's handwriting; when he overhears a rude man making racist comments in the men's room, he repeats the slur to Jeff and accidentally offends an African-American doctor – who then makes an error and shaves Jeff's head instead of performing his nasal surgery.

Jeff and Susie are incensed to learn that "a despicable bald man's" racist comments are to blame for the mistake; when Larry tries to explain the misunderstanding, the Blacks overhear his use of the word and storm out in anger, opting to live with the Greenes instead. Jeff then finds that he, too, is now a victim of anti-bald prejudice when would-be client Ben Stiller opts not to sign with him. When Larry recruits a pharmacist to decipher Sheila's note, he misinterprets her complaints about "all these brothers and sisters" and "the Blacks." Angered, he gives Larry a bottle of estrogen rather than his prescription, the effects of which then ruin his evening with Sheila; Larry is left with sad memories of better days with Cheryl. The Blacks return to Larry's home, driven out by Jeff's not-yet-ameliorated snoring. When Larry is called to testify about Jeff's doctor's misconduct, he is again put on the spot and ordered to repeat the racist man's words, leaving him flustered.
