CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM: MEET THE BLACKS {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The sixth season premiere in this comedy series in which producer/comedian Larry David plays a slightly exaggerated version of himself who often ends up embroiled in misunderstandings and social faux pas.
In this episode, the Davids are annoyed by a misbehaving smoke alarm. Larry admits to Jeff and Richard that he skipped their friend Marty Funkhouser's party of the previous evening because, as they are all invited to Ted Danson's that night, he wished to avoid "back-to-back" social engagements. He decides to pretend that he had simply mistaken the date, though Cheryl is more concerned with the many families left homeless by Hurricane Edna. Cheryl and Larry arrive at Marty's and feign shock when he explains that they are a day late for his soirée; the plan backfires when he invites them in for a visit. Jeff and Susie then arrive as well, having decided to steal Larry's fib. Larry informs Jeff that they are "locked in" for a night with the Funkhausers after all. During a round of "The Newlywed Game," Larry openly admits that he is attracted to Cha Cha, Richard's pretty younger girlfriend, and he ends up having to go along with Cheryl's idea to host a displaced family in order to win her forgiveness.
On the following day, Larry pulls the "wrong date" trick on Ted Danson, but it again fails when Ted and Mary invite them in and they are joined by an equally "confused" Richard and Cha Cha. Later, Larry and Cheryl rush to the airport and meet the Blacks – who, Larry is quick to point out, are indeed African-American. Larry is annoyed when Loretta Black immediately begins smoking cigarettes inside the house. The Davids decide to host a welcome party for their guests and are soon stunned to find that Marty has been ordering his memorably delicious party cakes from an erotic bakery. Everyone is shocked when Jeff unwittingly serves a very inappropriate phallic dessert to the Black children. Larry realizes that he now does not have the moral high ground to force Loretta to stop smoking. However, one of her cigarettes causes a trash-can fire that quickly destroys the Davids' home, thanks to the disabled smoke alarm, thus leaving the Blacks homeless yet again. In the midst of the chaos, Ted Danson arrives and seems shocked to learn that he has "mistaken" the date of Larry's party.
