PRIVATE PRACTICE: IN WHICH WE MEET ADDISON, A NICE GIRL FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this medical drama series spun off from "Grey’s Anatomy" that chronicles the lives of Dr. Addison Montgomery and her friends and fellow doctors at Oceanside Wellness Group in Los Angeles. In this episode, in Seattle, Addison informs Richard that she is transferring to a clinic in California to work alongside a number of her old friends, though he insists that she will not be happy stepping away from surgery. Things turn awkward for her right away when she discovers that she has moved in next door to Sam, her best friend Naomi's ex-husband, and that no one other than Naomi was aware that she was joining them. The other doctors object to her hiring, saying that there should have been a vote, and Pete wonders if his kiss with Addison influenced her decision. Addison is further taken aback to see her low-key "birthing suite" and to learn that she has no staff apart from Dell, a young midwife-in-training. At the same time, a patient, Ken, collapses and dies of a stroke while preparing to give a sperm sample, and his distraught girlfriend Leslie declares that she still wants to bear his child. When Violet criticizes Cooper's unusual dating habits, he points out that she is currently "stalking" her ex-boyfriend, Allan.

Addison receives her first case when a teenager, Lucy, arrives in labor, accompanied by her disapproving father. Charlotte, the attending on Ken's case, bluntly refuses Leslie's request for his sperm on legal grounds, and Sam vows to fight her on it. Addison prepares for Lucy's holistic birth plan and is shocked when Pete questions her about their kiss, and Dell accuses her of not respecting his midwifery skills when she brushes off his offer to assist. While at a store, Violet encounters one of her patients, Jenny, having a manic episode and counting floor tiles. Violet, Sam and Charlotte talk to a lawyer about Ken's wishes, and he agrees that Leslie can indeed legally request the sample from his body, but matters are further complicated by the arrival of Marie, Ken's estranged wife. Violet tries to assist Jenny, but the woman lashes out violently when touched and mildly injures Violet. Pete and Addison ease Lucy through her labor, but she falls unconscious and her panicked father admits that her mother died of heart complications in childbirth. Cooper joins Violet at the store and Jenny's brother calls the police, but Violet vows to find the source of her breakdown. Marie tells Naomi that Ken left her after seventeen years and that she herself wants his sperm, refusing to allow the younger Leslie to have his child instead.

Addison is upset to realize she needs to perform an emergency C-section on Lucy in the under-equipped birthing suite, but Pete assures her that he can fully anesthetize the girl with acupuncture. With Dell's assistance, a nervous Addison performs the surgery, while elsewhere Sam and Violet argue about Ken's case, drawing parallels to their own breakup. Violet then talks with Marie again, suggesting that it is time to "let it go." Addison saves Lucy and her baby, and Violet and Cooper discover that Jenny was vividly reminded of her young son, who died of brain cancer, by an ad playing at the store. They gently assure her that his death was not her fault and that she was a good mother until the end, and she begins to return to herself. Marie gives up her claim on Ken's sperm and Leslie undergoes the implantation procedure, and Violet admits to Cooper that she is indeed having trouble letting go of her old relationship. Naomi tells Addison that she needs her to "be her someone" as she deals with her divorce, and when the other doctors confront the two of them again about the lack of a vote, Addison stands up for herself and declares that she is staying at Oceanside no matter what.
