GREY'S ANATOMY: ALL BY MYSELF (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, the residents wait anxiously to hear who has been awarded the solo surgery, and everyone is surprised when Webber instructs Cristina, who was unanimously chosen by the attendings but has been banned from the competition, to select one of her colleagues. Webber also informs her that she is to work with and "impress" Dr. Dixon in order to secure her position as the new head of cardio. The residents all attempt to win Cristina over, though Izzie is distracted by Denny's continued presence, and Sloan reminds an eager Lexie that she is "on cappuccino duty" as Bailey requests to join him on an innovative larynx surgery. However, the patient, Kathleen, seems more interested in working on her blog than in hearing about the operation that could finally restore her voice. In the ER, teenage sisters Emma and Holly are brought in after a car accident and annoy the doctors with their furious arguing, and when Alex spots a problem with Holly that Sadie missed, Emma calls after her that she "hopes she dies." George formally tells Cristina that he is no longer "007" and has grown as a surgeon, and he later spots Izzie, who forgot to open and staff the clinic, conversing with Denny.
Cristina tells Dixon about her difficulty in choosing the resident for the surgery, and Lexie talks with Kathleen's husband, who is frustrated at his lack of communication with his wife. Derek observes that Meredith and Cristina are fighting, though she denies it, and Emma panics when Holly crashes and is rushed into surgery, upset over her parting words to her sister. Meredith tells Cristina to "do what she has to do" in terms of the solo, and during Holly's surgery, Dixon states that Cristina should simply rank her colleagues' skills objectively and choose the best one. Callie confides in Sloan about Sadie, unsure if she is being flirtatious or not, but Sloan orders her to focus on her work and makes a firm "no hot interns" rule, which seems to include Lexie. George learns that Izzie has been largely absent all week, and Alex frets that he has made a mistake when Holly worsens, but Dixon bluntly states that Holly is brain-dead through no fault of his but will, fortunately, make a good organ donor. Alex succinctly informs Cristina that he has practiced the necessary surgery and is the most prepared, and Owen tells her to "go with her gut" in choosing. George begins to realize that something is wrong with Izzie, who is again shirking her duties to spend intimate time with Denny and is uninterested in the solo.
Sadie complains to Lexie that the intern program is "broken," pointing out that Sloan is clearly interested in her. Sloan snaps at an overeager Bailey during Kathleen's operation, but she explains that she wants to learn from the "thrilling" experience. Emma and her parents are upset at Dixon's lack of bedside manner when she tells them frankly that Holly is gone, and Izzie happily tells a bemused Cristina about her "mind-blowing" relationship. Kathleen's husband finally vents his frustration when she seems reluctant to try speaking, and Sadie tells Webber that the disastrous appendectomy was her idea. Dixon complains that Holly's organs could save lives if her family would allow them to be used, and Cristina takes her advice to "leave feelings out of it" and selects Alex for the surgery. Alex rushes to tell Izzie the good news and blurts out that he loves her, assuring her that he will not die as Denny did and declaring that she "makes him want to be better," also inviting her to scrub in with him on the solo. Meredith helps Emma to express her feelings for her sister, and Derek tells Meredith that he is "sick of the death," shaken by Holly's sudden demise. Lexie encourages Kathleen, who finds that she can indeed talk again, and Dixon calls Webber out on "torturing" Cristina with the tough choice. Cristina heatedly tells Meredith that she made her decision harder when she "made it personal," and Alex panics that he cannot handle the solo after all. Owen shows Cristina a unique method for clearing her head and kisses her, and Sloan gives in when Lexie arrives at his apartment and throws herself at him, begging him to "teach her." Holly's organs are harvested for donation, and Meredith sternly reminds the other doctors that Alex is "one of them" as he and Izzie efficiently work together on the surgery.
