LOST: WHATEVER HAPPENED, HAPPENED (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters’ past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, in 1977, Jin awakens to find that young Ben has been shot, and he quickly takes him back to the Barracks, where the Dharma crew is panicking over the disappearance of the “hostile,” Sayid. Kate meets Roger Linus, Ben’s father, and Roger is shocked when Jin arrives with the gravely injured Ben. Sawyer checks the security tapes and investigates Sayid’s cell with Horace, who determines that it was unlocked by a janitor’s keys. Knowing that both Jack and Roger are janitors, Sawyer sends Miles off to round up and guard Hurley, Jack and Kate. Juliet operates on Ben, but says she cannot fix him and he needs a “real surgeon.” Jack is annoyed to be under “house arrest,” but Hurley is more preoccupied with the principles of time travel, citing “Back to the Future” and wondering if they will cease to exist, despite Miles’ exasperated explanation that this “already happened” and Ben obviously does not die, as he grows into an adult in the future. Juliet comes by and requests Jack’s help in fixing Ben, but he refuses. Kate reprimands him for refusing to save a child, but he argues that he “already” saved Ben’s life at her request in 2004 and that he needs to stop trying to “fix things.” Angry, Kate goes to the infirmary and donates blood to Ben, and she talks with Roger, who has realized that Ben stole his keys and freed Sayid, and worries over his own poor parenting skills. Miles and Hurley continue debating time travel, with Miles stating that time is no longer “in a straight line” for them, but he is stumped when Hurley asks why adult Ben does not remember being shot by Sayid as a child. In 2005, Kate brings baby Aaron to visit Cassidy and gives her money for Clementine, Sawyer’s daughter, as he requested. Cassidy, however, scoffs at Kate’s explanation of his bravery, saying that he stayed behind to avoid responsibility. By 2007, however, Kate and Cassidy have become close, and after Kate leaves Ben, Sun, Jack and Sayid at the marina, she takes Aaron to a grocery store, where she briefly loses him. She confesses to Cassidy that she had been “expecting” someone to take him, and Cassidy suggests that it is because she “took” him herself in an attempt to comfort herself after losing Sawyer. In 1977, Kate and Juliet decide to appeal to the Others for help in fixing Ben, and Kate is surprised when Sawyer offers to help, saying he is doing it for Juliet. They discuss Clementine, and Sawyer says he was not “fit” to be a father, nor Kate’s boyfriend, and says his time with the Dharma Initiative has changed him. At the Barracks, Juliet angrily confronts Jack over his refusal to help Ben and says that she and the others do not need his “saving,” and he can only say that he came back because he was “supposed to.” In 2007, Kate goes to visit Carole, Claire’s mother, at a motel, and confesses everything, saying that Claire is alive and she, Kate, has been raising Aaron because she “needed him.” She says that she plans to return to the island to find Claire and will leave Carole’s grandson with her, and she bids a tearful farewell to a sleeping Aaron. In 1977, Kate and Sawyer run into the Others and explain that Ben needs help, and they are taken to see Richard Alpert, who says that if they take Ben, he will “never be the same” and will “lose his innocence” and not remember the experience, but he will always be an Other. Grimly realizing they have no choice, Kate and Sawyer agree, and Richard takes Ben into the Temple. On the island in 2007, Ben awakens at the Hydra after being knocked out by Sun and is stunned to see someone who appears to be John Locke, whom he murdered, sitting calmly by his bed and welcoming him “back to the world of the living.” Includes commercials.
