Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Inside Media events. Held at the Paley Center in New York, this evening honors “Liza’s At the Palace…”, a television special of the concert given by Liza Minnelli at the Palace Theatre on Broadway. Host Pat Mitchell (president and CEO, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening comments and introduces both moderator Michael Feinstein and Minnelli, who briefly takes the stage. Mitchell then invites executive producers Joann Young and Neil Meron to the stage, and they offer some background details about the concert and the film’s production. After the film, Minnelli and Feinstein take the stage again for a brief conversation. The topics addressed include: her first concert film from 1972, “Liza With a Z”; the idea for the show, originally conceived as a record; Feinstein’s involvement with its production; Minnelli’s interest in celebrating her godmother, the famed composer and actress Kay Thompson; the challenges of recreating Thompson’s act, of which there was no record; the lengthy rehearsals needed; Minnelli’s collaboration with pianist Billy Stritch and with lyricist Fred Ebb; her refusal to write an autobiography, and her feeling that her music, especially this show, serves as her memoirs; her first television experience on “Art Linkletter’s House Party”; her later first professional television appearance with “Uncle” Gene Kelly; the French singer Charles Aznavour and his influence on her life and career; how Aznavour taught her of the “immediacy” of the stage; her talent “at finding talented people”; and a personal anecdote about Minnelli singing with her mother Judy Garland at a young age. Longtime friend and “Cabaret” co-star Joel Grey greets Minnelli from the audience as the program concludes.
