PRIVATE PRACTICE: NOTHING TO FEAR (TV)
Summary
One in this medical drama series spun off from “Grey’s Anatomy” that chronicles the lives of Dr. Addison Montgomery and her friends and fellow doctors at Oceanside Wellness Group in Los Angeles. In this episode, Addison wakes up with Kevin and reassures him that she was working late the previous night, not admitting her kiss with Wyatt. At work, Naomi says she has a date, but refuses to divulge details, and they hurry to help with a delivery of a young woman, Judy, who is giving her baby up for adoption to a couple, the Sinclairs. When the baby is discovered to be in distress, Addison prepares to perform a C-section. She discovers that the baby has a hernia and needs surgery, and Judy begs them to leave the decisions up to the Sinclairs, as she is no longer the mother. Elsewhere, Charlotte and Cooper share a romantic morning, and she impulsively proposes marriage. At Oceanside, Violet tries to talk to Pete about the “weirdness” between them since their brief relationship, but he stiffly says that she chose Sheldon over him. Pete then goes to see his patient, another doctor named Alexander Ball, who is suffering from cancer. Sam arrives and tells Alexander that his chemo is not working, and he accepts the news calmly and requests that the doctors assist him in dying painlessly. Addison, Charlotte and the others explain the situation to the Sinclairs, who panic at having to make big decisions and leave. Judy frets over having to decide what is best for the baby, but is calmed by Dell’s advice. Violet helps a woman named Nora with severe agoraphobia, whose daughter is getting married the next day. Nora soon panics and barricades herself in Violet’s bathroom, refusing to come out. Sam, Pete and Cooper debate Alexander’s euthanasia request, with Sam refusing to participate and Pete arguing that it is the only humane thing to do. Addison finally confesses to Naomi about her kiss with Wyatt, but says nothing else happened. Pete goes to Alexander’s home and explains why they cannot help him die, but he says that as he has no one left in his life and does not want to die slowly and painfully, he has already begun ingesting a deadly cocktail of drugs on his own. He advises Pete not to “end up tragic” and alone like him, and Pete decides to stay with him. Judy’s baby’s surgery goes well, and she decides to see him. When the Sinclairs return, saying they want to adopt after all, Judy is angry that they are only interested now that the baby is “fixed” and says she is keeping him. Violet talks to Nora through the door and Nora says that she is afraid of everything. Violet says that she is scared as well and confides that she is pregnant. Nora assures her that motherhood is rewarding, and Violet presses her to attend her own daughter’s wedding. Sam arrives at Alexander’s home, looking for Pete, and attempts to call 911 when he learns what Alexander has done, but Pete stops him. Alexander suffers great pain and talks about relationships with Sam, saying he has regrets about never finding love. At Oceanside, the Sinclairs bring the baby supplies that they have purchased and give them to Judy, voicing their regret over the loss of the child. Violet is called to Nora’s daughter’s wedding, where she is experiencing a panic attack, and talks to her about her fear stemming from her husband’s departure. Violet encourages her to be strong, and ends up walking her down the aisle, to her daughter’s great happiness, and Nora tells Violet she will be a good mother. Later, Cooper finds her hiding in a closet, like Nora, and he tells her that he is eloping to Vegas with Charlotte that night, and she reveals that she is pregnant and does not know if the father is Sheldon or Pete and marvels at the absurdity of their lives. Elsewhere, Dell supports Judy’s decision to keep the baby, but Naomi tells her to do so only if it is for the right reasons. Pete steals morphine for Alexander and Sam finally gives in and allows Alexander to inject himself, and as he sleeps, Sam and Pete discuss their fears of dying alone. Alexander wakes up and is fearful, saying that he will be forgotten when he dies, and Pete comforts him, assuring him that “[he] was here,” and he dies in Pete’s arms. Judy decides to let the Sinclairs adopt after all and tearfully requests that they treat their son well. Cooper tells Charlotte that he wants a proper wedding with her, but she says she cannot face it without her father, who has recently died. Addison admits her kiss with Wyatt to Kevin and says she has been unhappy in their relationship, and they break up. She goes to find Wyatt in his office, but instead is stunned to find Naomi in flagrante with none other than her own brother, Archer. Includes commercials.
