Summary
The twenty-fourth annual special presentation of Kennedy Center honors held in Washington, D.C. Recipients of this year's honors are singer Julie Andrews, pianist Van Cliburn, conductor and music producer Quincy Jones, actor Jack Nicholson, and opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
Highlights include: an introduction by United States President George W. Bush; an introduction by news anchor Walter Cronkite; actor Warren Beatty speaking about Nicholson, and a video presentation of Nicholson’s life narrated by Beatty; praise for Nicholson from actors Annette Bening, Candice Bergen, and Michael Douglas; National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice speaking about Cliburn, and a video presentation of Cliburn’s life; Rene Fleming performing “The Silence of Mysterious Night” by Rachmaninoff, accompanied on the piano by Olga Kern, the winner of the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; a choir performing the song “The Eyes of Texas”; comedian Carol Burnett speaking about Andrews, and narrating a video presentation about her life; a musical medley of songs from Andrews’ work, including Patrick Wilson singing “On the Street Where You Live,” Kristin Chenoweth singing “A Spoonful of Sugar,” Robert Goulet singing “If Ever I Would Leave You,” Audra McDonald singing “I Could Have Danced All Night,” Jeremy Irons singing “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” and Rebecca Luker and company singing “The Sound of Music”; a speech from James A. Johnson, chairman of the Kennedy Center; opera singer Marilyn Horne speaking about Pavarotti and narrating a video presentation of his life; a speech from Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan in Pavarotti’s honor; opera singers June Anderson, John Vallier, Sherrill Milnes, Frank Lopardo, Jennifer Larmore, and William Burton singing a sextet from the opera “Lucia di Lammermoor”; talk show host Oprah Winfrey speaking about Jones, and narrating a video presentation about his life; Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles performing “Let the Good Times Roll” and “My Buddy”; Patti Austin, James Ingram, Wonder, and Charles performer “Everybody Rejoice”; and Fleming performing “Take Care of This House” from the musical “1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.” Commercials deleted.
