BONES: THE BABY IN THE BOUGH (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series loosely based on the life of forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs about the crime-solving prowess of forensic anthropologist Temperance "Bones" Brennan and FBI agent Seeley Booth.
In this episode, Brennan and Booth report to a crime scene where a woman's car has been run off the road. Brennan realizes that the female driver was doused with gasoline before being set afire. Booth hears crying and subsequently finds the woman's baby in a car seat, stuck in a tree's bough. Booth locates a hidden key in the diaper bag, which the baby then swallows. Booth tells Brennan that the infant must stay with them until the evidence is retrieved.
Back at the Jeffersonian Institution, Hodgins finds evidence from the charred corpse determining that the woman lived in West Virginia. Booth and Brennan subsequently travel there with the baby to find out who wanted the mother dead. Soon, locals Jimmy and Carol Grant have identified the woman as their friend Meg Taylor, and reveal that her son was named Andy, for whom they babysat. Upon touring the rubber factory where Meg worked, boss Chip Barnett reports that her husband, a felon named Lou, might have been jealous of Dave Shepherd, an accountant from the plant's headquarters who just visited the site and was flirting with Meg.
At Meg's trailer, Booth finds Lou ransacking the contents. He's taken into custody, though reports surface that Lou was in jail when Meg was killed. When Andy finally produces the key, its origins turn out to be from a West Virginia bank's safe deposit box. Booth and Brennan observe that the box holds a gun which is traced to its owner, Earl Delancy, one of Meg's co-workers. Upon questioning, Earl says that, like many other unemployed locals, he pawned his valuables, including the weapon.
Later, the agents hear that Dave has been taken into custody. However, Brennan soon discovers that the suspect is a bum that stole Dave's credit card upon finding his bloodied knapsack. Residue from the weapon quickly proves that Dave was shot with the gun at the rubber plant. Booth and Brennan return to the plant and check recently bagged mulch to see if Dave's body was ground up at the site. Meanwhile, a computer flash drive from Dave's bag shows that he discovered that the rubber plant's books had been doctored.
As Booth and Brennan find bone in the mulch, they realize that Chip has fled. After a chase, Chip admits to killing Dave, who was going to turn him in for cooking the books. Chip also explains that Meg found the murder weapon and blackmailed him for money so that she could take her ailing baby to a doctor. Chip then says that he tracked Meg down en route to the hospital and killed her. Searching Meg's trailer one last time, Booth finds a letter in which Meg asked Carol to take care of Andy if anything happened to her. Booth and Brennan watch with a bit of sadness as Carol and Jimmy take Andy away. Commercials deleted.
