Summary
This program features the first annual Kennedy Center celebration honoring Marian Anderson, Fred Astaire, George Balanchine, Richard Rodgers, and Arthur Rubinstein. Paying tribute to the honorees in word and/or performance are the following: Leonard Bernstein; John Rubinstein singing; Art Buchwald with political satire; Grace Bumbry with Julius Rudel; Harry Belafonte with a film tribute to Anderson; Aretha Franklin; Sen. Edward Kennedy, Rosemary Harris, Hal Linden, Eddie Albert, and Jose Ferrer; and Mary Martin with a film tribute to Rodgers, followed by Florence Henderson, John Raitt, and Tony Bennett; Edward Villella with a film tribute to Balanchine; Suzanne Farrell and Peter Martins in a pas de deux; Sen. Charles Percy; Alberta Hunter singing; Isaac Stern with a film tribute to Rubinstein; Stern and Itzhak Perlman with a violin duet; Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. with a film tribute to Astaire, followed by "One" with the cast of "A Chorus Line"; and Leonard Bernstein.
