Summary
The twenty-first annual special presentation of Kennedy Center honors held in Washington, D.C. Recipients of this year's honors are comedian Bill Cosby, lyricist Fred Ebb, composer John Kander, singer-songwriter Willie Nelson, pianist, composer, and conductor André Previn, and former child actress and diplomat Shirley Temple. Highlights include: an introduction by news anchor Walter Cronkite; a video presentation of the biographies of Ebb and Kander, narrated by Alec Baldwin; a performance of “Willkommen” from the musical “Cabaret,” performed by Alan Cumming and Joel Grey; Bebe Neuwirth and Chita Rivera performing “All That Jazz” from the musical “Chicago”; Liza Minelli performing the theme from “New York, New York,” accompanied by Tony Roberts, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Jacques d’Amboise, Christine Baranski, Betty Comden, Ron Silver, Terrence McNally, NYPD officer Carmine Randazzo, Edward Albee, taxi driver Max Rock, Cumming, Grey, Neuwirth, and Rivera; a video biography of Cosby narrated by Phylicia Rashad; a tribute to Cosby featuring Robert Culp, Sinbad, Phil Caputo, Troy D. Brown Sr., and students Lisa Richards, Brian Gentry, and Tom Angelucci, culminating with a performance of medley featuring “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “That’s What Friends are For,” “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”; a video biography of Nelson narrated by Tommy Lee Jones; a performance of “Hello Walls” by Dwight Yoakam; Lyle Lovett performing “Night Life”; Kris Kristofferson, Shelby Lynne, Yoakam, and Lovett singing “On the Road Again”; an announcement by James A. Johnson, chairman of the Kennedy Center, previewing upcoming events at the Center; a video biography of Previn narrated by Mia Farrow; a tribute to Previn by Leonard Slatkin; Renee Fleming performing “I Want Magic” from the opera version of “A Streetcar Named Desire” accompanied by the Curtis Institute Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Patrick Summers; a video biography of Temple narrated by Jack Lemmon; a tribute to Temple featuring Henry Kissinger, the United States Air Force Band and Honor Guard, Cronkite, and a performance by the fifth grade class of the United Nations International School of “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and “On the Good Ship Lollipop.” Commercials deleted.
