Summary
This Kennedy Center celebration honors William "Count" Basie, Cary Grant, Helen Hayes, Jerome Robbins, and Rudolf Serkin. The honorees are paid tribute in the following highlights: Walter Cronkite introduces each of the honorees; President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan appear at a White House reception for the honorees; Leontyne Price sings "Vissi D'Arte" from Puccini's "Tosca"; Mikhail Baryshnikov presents a film tribute to Jerome Robbins; the New York City Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre perform an excerpt from "Fancy Free," with Baryshnikov, Christopher D'Amboise, and Danilo Radojevic; Art Buchwald presents political satire; James Stewart presents a film tribute to Hayes; Donald Sutherland, Meryl Streep, and Richard Chamberlain perform readings on acting in tribute to Hayes; and Henry Mancini offers a film tribute to Basie.
Seiji Ozawa presents a film tribute to Serkin; pianist Cecile Licad plays the second movement from the Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor by Saint-Saens, with Mstislav Rostropovich conducting; Kennedy Center Chairman Roger L. Stevens talks about the Center's funding; Victor Borge performs a comic bit at the piano; Rex Harrison presents a film tribute to Grant; Audrey Hepburn recites a poem in honor of Grant; and the cast of "Barnum" performs "Come Follow the Band."
