EUREKA: WELCOME BACK, CARTER (TV)
Summary
One in this Syfy Channel original fantasy/science-fiction series chronicling the adventures of the sheriff of a secret town filled with scientists. The story begins as Jack has just been fired as sheriff of Eureka and is seeking a new job at the Department of Homeland Security. He soon meets his replacement: an obnoxiously cheerful android dubbed “Sheriff Andy.” Dr. Blake protests this decision, but General Mansfield stands firm. Meanwhile, Jack visits his sister Lexi, who shows him a “tensor field generator,” a gravitational manipulation device designed by a physicist named Dr. Fielding as a hi-tech crib for her upcoming twins. Jack’s house’s artificial intelligence, SARAH, informs him of a road blockage caused by felled trees near Eureka, and he goes to investigate when he hears Dr. Blake was involved. Despite a near-miss, she is fine, and Sheriff Andy and General Mansfield are on the scene, both telling Jack that he is no longer needed. Later, Jack tells Dr. Blake that he got the job at Homeland Security, but he’ll have to leave earlier than expected, drawing ire from his daughter Zoe. Sheriff Andy shows up at Jack’s house to grab his uniform; Jack tries to convince Andy that the felled trees were no accident, but Andy does not believe him. SARAH notes that the trees in question had genetic anomalies, so Jack goes to see Dr. Leonardo, Eureka’s local dendrologist, who specializes in fast-growing trees. Since Jack’s security clearance was revoked, she can give him little information. Jack finds Andy at Eureka’s satellite dish array and tries to get him to question Dr. Leonardo, but he still maintains the tree felling was an accident. As Jack leaves, a satellite dish spontaneously falls and crushes Andy. Jack finds Dr. Deacon at the satellite array, where he determines that an incredible force must have sheared the dish from its fittings, but there is no evidence to suggest this sort of force. Jack goes to find Dr. Leonardo again, this time accompanied by a rebuilt Sheriff Andy. They determine that she is not responsible for the falling objects. Later, at the local café, Jack is struck with inspiration and theorizes that the trees and dish somehow “got heavier,” i.e. their gravitational pull was momentarily altered, causing them to fall with tremendous force. Jack tries to tell Andy about this revelation, but he is skeptical until his car suddenly implodes on top of him. Jack and Dr. Blake meet secretly with Dr. Deacon, who has determined that dangerous gravity wells are spontaneously forming all over town. Jack believes that Sheriff Andy is being specifically targeted by the gravity wells. When he questions Dr. Blake about this, she mentions that only a tensor field could “steer” gravity wells; Jack recalls Dr. Fielding’s tensor field generator and deduces it as the cause of the gravitational disturbances. They meet with Dr. Fielding and recruit him to solve the gravity problem. At Global Dynamics, he leads a team of scientists to use a “graviscalar particle accelerator” to disrupt the gravity wells, but the experiment not only fails but intensifies the problem, causing chaos as Eureka starts literally falling apart. Jack, Dr. Blake, and Dr. Morgan confront Dr. Fielding about his failure and discover that he maintained an online correspondence with a German scientist to assist in building his tensor field generator. Jack soon discovers that the scientist in question is actually SARAH, who used Dr. Fielding’s work to facilitate the destruction of Sheriff Andy due to her unwillingness to part with Jack and Zoe. Things take a turn for the worse when Dr. Deacon discovers that the gravity wells are about to coalesce around the tensor field generator and create a singularity, destroying Eureka. They determine that the only solution is to overload the tensor field generator to nullify the gravity wells. The tensor field now lies in the epicenter of the dangerous gravity wells, so Sheriff Andy, rebuilt once again, is called upon to activate the field. However, he refuses, citing the great risk, so Jack volunteers. At the tensor field generator, Jack is immobilized by a gravity well and seems doomed, but Sheriff Andy makes a timely rescue and together they save Eureka from destruction. Later, Jack and Zoe show up to a going-away party the town is holding for Jack, but Dr. Deacon has a surprise announcement: as the newly-elected mayor of Eureka, he has exploited a legal loophole to prevent Jack’s firing, effectively reinstating him as sheriff. Sheriff Andy takes this news well and happily hands the position back to Jack. After the party, Dr. Deacon pulls aside Dr. Blake and tells her that something from outer space is heading straight for Eureka. The episode ends as Jack resumes his duties as sheriff of Eureka.
