PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: THE CREATIVE PROCESS: INSIDE HOUSE {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Creative Process events. Held at The Paley Center in Los Angeles, this evening honors "House, M.D." a dramatic series about Dr. Gregory House, an acerbic maverick with a limp, who uses his Sherlockian powers of reasoning to solve difficult infectious disease cases.

Host Craig Hitchcock (executive director, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening comments before bringing moderator Ray Richmond (syndicated columnist) to the stage. Next, Richmond introduces a clip montage from "House" that includes the following highlights: House fighting his visions of the late Volakis as he recalls recent encounters with Cuddy, Foreman, and Wilson; House attending Kutner's funeral with Foreman; House being counseled by Foreman over his grief for Kutner; Cuddy helping House to kick his Vicodin addiction; House discovering the truth behind the Vicodin-induced visions; and Wilson driving House to the Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital to be committed.

After the screening, Richmond introduces the panelists: executive producers David Shore and Katie Jacobs; co-executive producer Greg Yaitanes; and cast members Omar Epps (Eric Foreman), Lisa Edelstein (Lisa Cuddy), Robert Sean Leonard (James Wilson), and Hugh Laurie (Gregory House.)

Panelists touch on such topics as: how the series was initially pitched to networks; when producers first thought of Laurie for the title role; how Laurie has perfected his American accent and masked his British tones; Laurie's audition process; the camaraderie of the cast and crew; how writers hope to make a smooth transition from the season five cliffhanger to the sixth season's two-hour premiere; the ways in which writers try to keep the show original after five seasons; if the creators made a conscious effort for House and Wilson to mimic Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson; if Edelstein and Laurie enjoyed "making out" after several seasons of buildup; if the actors have input in the show's scripts; if people on the street confuse Laurie with his House character; how the producers retain the plot's history; the typical shooting schedule for each show; the amount of rewrites required for every episode; favorite storylines; and feedback on the show's oftentimes bleak nature.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: shows which proved inspirational to the producers while "House" was being conceived; the use of subtle humor in scripts; if the actors are "grossed out" by the show's operating scenes and gruesome diseases; season six developments; if Laurie's musical talents will be integrated into future episodes; why most storylines take place only in the hospital; if any of the medical conditions depicted are based on real cases; whether any of the cast members aspire to pen scripts; and whether producers know how the show will ultimately conclude.
