WIDE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT: THE DICK CAVETT SHOW {KATHARINE HEPBURN INTERVIEW, PART 1 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of interview programs hosted by Dick Cavett. This program is part one of Cavett's special two-part interview with screen legend Katharine Hepburn. Cavett makes some opening introductory remarks to the viewer about the program, which was taped at an earlier time without an audience. He explains that Hepburn arrived at the New York studio recently to do a test, still not sure she would consent to a television interview. She then surprised Cavett and his staff by suggesting they simply tape the interview right there and then. Preceding the actual interview is footage of Hepburn's arrival on the set before she was aware the camera was rolling, as she orders a lower coffee table so she can put her feet up, expresses her distaste for the carpeting, and has her hair and make-up checked -- all with her characteristic bluntness. During the interview, Hepburn discusses the following topics, among others: her early theater roles after graduation from Bryn Mawr; her early difficulties controlling the pitch and speed of her voice; her parents and her happy childhood; her battles with fear; her belief that luck played a great part in her early movie success; the American Film Theater, a movie subscription series which produced her latest film, "A Delicate Balance" by Edward Albee; the support she received from John Barrymore and Jane Cowl; her difficulties as a student; her teenage penchant for breaking into neighbors' houses; the management of her money by her late father; Dorothy Parker's famous putdown of her emotional range as an actress; her fear of going to the Academy Awards; her belief in maintaining her body -- for both acting and sports; how she quit smoking; Spencer Tracy's gift of concentration as an actor; how Sidney Poitier was thrown off-balance by Tracy's presence at first during the filming o "Guess Who's Coming to Diner"; the great lessons about acting she learned from Tracy; the role of director John (Jack) Ford in boosting Tracy's career; her contention that her success has come from realizing that she couldn't have it all -- a film career and motherhood; and the benefits of growing up with siblings. Includes commercials, promos and public service announcements. Part two of this interview continues on T84:0230.
(Cavett hosted several talk shows under the title, "The Dick Cavett Show," which aired on ABC from 1969 to 1972, on PBS from 1977 to 1982, on the USA network from 1985 to 1986, and on CNBC from 1989 to 1995. During 1973 to 1975, the show aired irregularly as part of "ABC's Wide World of Entertainment." Other versions of "The Dick Cavett Show" include a variety series on CBS in 1975 and a talk show on ABC in 1986.)
