NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS:
UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of New York Philharmonic programs intended for young audiences and featuring musical analysis interspersed with performance. In this program from Carnegie Hall, Leonard Bernstein discusses ancient instruments and their evolution, as well as new and unusual instruments. The concert begins with "The Little Train" by Heitor Villa-Lobos, followed by a discussion of South American percussion instruments. The following works are then played, each preceded by a discussion of the evolution of various orchestral instruments: a 16th-century Spanish dance; Giovanni Gabrieli's "Canzone for Eight Brass Instruments"; and the first movement of Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major. The concert closes with a survey of new instruments and performances of the following works: Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky's "Concerted Piece for Tape Recorder and Orchestra"; and Mark Bucci's "Concerto for Kazoo and Orchestra" with Anita Darian on the kazoo.
