GREAT PERFORMANCES: LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER: NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC WITH ZUBIN MEHTA AND VLADIMIR ASHKENAZY (TV)

Summary

One in this series on the performing arts. This installment -- one in a series of live broadcasts from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City -- is hosted by Carlos Moseley, former president of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and features a performance by renowned pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy. Moseley introduces the evening's program, which includes American composer George Walker's 1980 "In Praise of Folly," Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G, op. 58, and Richard Strauss's "Ein Heldenleben," op. 40. Under Zubin Mehta's leadership, the Philharmonic performs "In Praise of Folly." After the performance, Walker joins Moseley backstage for an interview, during which he answers questions about his three-sided career (as composer, pianist, and educator), the experience of the Philharmonic playing one's compositions, and his upcoming works. Following this brief interlude, Ashkenazy joins the Philharmonic for its performance of Beethoven's piano concerto. After the performance, Ashkenazy joins Moseley backstage for an interview. Ashkenazy and Moseley discuss the following topics: the sublime quality of the concerto; Ashkenazy's nascent conducting career; his son's piano career; his physical and mental approaches to playing music; and his upcoming performances. Moseley then talks with Mehta, the Philharmonic's concertmaster Glenn Dicterow, and the Philharmonic's principal horn player Philip Myers. Dicterow and Myers talk briefly about the experience of joining the Philharmonic, then leave for their warm-up; Mehta remains with Moseley to discuss the experience of conducting the Philharmonic and to give a brief description of the narrative described by the music of Strauss's "Ein Heldenleben." Mehta rejoins the orchestra on-stage for its performance of "Ein Heldenleben."
