MARY TYLER MOORE: THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW (TV)

Summary

Mary Tyler Moore hosts this 20th anniversary retrospective on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," the long-running comedy about Mary Richards, a single career woman in a Minneapolis television newsroom. Moore introduces clip packages focused around individual characters, after which various cast members comment on their character's specific traits and quirks. The cast also pays homage to the late Ted Knight for his portrayal of selfish, narcissistic TV anchor Ted Baxter. Valerie Harper, who played Mary's neighbor Rhoda, comments that the show was ahead of its time for having a thirtysomething, single female as its main character. Ed Asner, who played Mary's boss Lou, states that the show revealed the changing consciousness of the seventies. He recalls Mary Richards as being "cute and perky," while Moore remembers her as being "assertive, straightforward, and honest." Highlight clips include: Mary being interviewed by future boss, Lou; Mary getting promoted to producer of the six o'clock news; Mary in jail because she won't reveal the source of a story; Lou telling Mary to call him "Lou," and how she can't bring herself to do it; Ted meeting future wife Georgette at one of Mary's dinner parties; Georgette giving birth; Johnny Carson's surprising visit to Mary's apartment; and Mary's inappropriate reaction to the death of Chuckles the Clown. Further highlights include clips of Mary's funniest dates, and sparring between Rhoda and landlady Phyllis. The program concludes as the teary-eyed cast watch moments from the last episode. Commercials deleted.
