Summary
One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty-five years of travel journalism through the backroads of America. First, deep in the woods of Arkansas, Kuralt meets Eddie Lovetts, a self-taught scholar who spends up to twelve hours a day in silent study. They take a tour through Lovett's library, where he expresses his opinions on some of the great thinkers and writers of all time. The next stop is a drug store in a small Illinois town, where each of the 162 regular customers has earned his or her own personal coffee mug. In the wheat fields of Nebraska, Kuralt visits with a community of "custom combiners," migrant workers who follow the wheat harvest, from Oklahoma to Montana, and from May to September. In another wheatfield in Texas, there is a roadside sculpture consisting of a row of ten Cadillacs nose-down in the ground. The eccentric owner of this work of art talks a little about its significance. The final segment explores the struggles that settlers faced, transforming the arid, western region of Nebraska into fertile farmland. Commercials deleted.
("On the Road with Charles Kuralt" consists of excerpts from Charles Kuralt's segments on the CBS Evening News, beginning in 1967. In the 1970s the show was aired in four special broadcasts, and in 1983 it was developed into a regular ten-week summer series. This program represents one of a series that was reworked for and aired on the Travel Channel in 1993.)
