CHER {BILL COSBY, THE MUPPETS, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS} {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The second season premiere in this variety series hosted by singer/actress Cher. This program's guests are Bill Cosby, the Smothers Brothers, and Jim Henson's Muppets.
As the program begins, Cher livens up a slow-paced version of "How Sweet It Is" and jokes about her "busy" summer. In the first sketch, Cher performs "Satisfaction" with Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem Band, and Cosby plays a producer with some syncopation suggestions.
Other highlights include the following: Tommy Smothers sings "Smoke Gets in My Eyes" while hounded by a Muppet pooch; Cosby plays a nose job patient who wants Cher to visit his doctor; Cher sings "Send in the Clowns"; the Smothers Brothers perform "Yo-Yo Man" as Tommy demonstrates yo-yo tricks; Cher performs the Beatles' "Something" as Sweetums courts her; and in the game show spoof, "The Pain Game," a husband is tortured each time his wife answers a question incorrectly. In a final series of sketches about fitness, Cher, Cosby, and the Smothers exercise while singing "Shape Up, America"; the Smothers perform a song about martial arts; Cher sings about bodybuilding while caressing musclemen; Cosby plays a doctor giving Sweetums a checkup; and everyone performs a reprise of "Shape Up, America." As the program concludes, Cher presents the Golden Life fitness award to Euell Gibbons, who promptly eats the plaque, and Jim Henson is introduced.
