Summary
One in this series of talk/interview programs hosted by Phil Donahue. In this program, Donahue welcomes war correspondent Peter Arnett, who recently returned from Baghdad after covering the Persian Gulf War. Donahue questions Arnett about the following topics: why he refused to let other reporters use his phone line out of Baghdad; accusations that he allowed Iraqi military personnel to use the phone line to transmit coded messages; the negative comments made by Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.) and House members about his coverage of the Persian Gulf War; Arnett's refusal to enter into a debate about his commentary with Sen. Simpson; why CNN will not release tapes showing senators acting in a friendly manner with Saddam Hussein three months before the war; and his views on the baby milk factory and bomb shelter destroyed by the United States military. Questions from the audience prompt Arnett to discuss the following topics: how talking negatively now may affect his reporting ability in the Middle East in the future; his feelings about Gen. H. Norman Schwartzkopf's comments on his coverage of the war; his seemingly skeptical view of the United States government; how much the Iraqis knew about what was going on during the war; the Iraqi censorship of his broadcast; his feelings about his interview with Saddam Hussein; the cash he had sewn into his jacket; the attitude of the Iraqi people toward him as an American; the treatment of American prisoners of war; and the possible ways the government could have stopped him from reporting on the war. Also included are clips of the following: Sen. Alan Simpson expressing his views on Arnett's coverage of the war; senators visiting Saddam Hussein at his birthday party; and President George Bush expressing his opinion of Arnett.
