JAPANESE BRUSH PAINTING {PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this series hosted by Takahiko Mikami, director of the Japanese Art Center in San Francisco. Mikami says he will be teaching Japanese Brush Painting in this thirteen-part series. Mikami gives a brief history of the art form. He describes the use of color, the subject matter, and some artistic features of brush painting. He paints an image of a fish to illustrate the simplicity of the style. He goes on to talk about the use of perspective in brush painting, using a painting of Mount Fuji as an example. Next, Mikami describes the tools needed for brush painting, including "sumi," "suzuri," and bamboo brushes. He demonstrates how to use these tools, then he checks on the progress of the students in the studio. The program concludes after Mikami demonstrates how to paint several images, including bamboo, birds, flowers, a horse, and a lobster.
