CEILING UNLIMITED: PAN AMERICAN AIRLINES (RADIO)
Summary
One in this series of informative patriotic dramas about aviation featuring Orson Welles and sponsored by the makers of Lockheed and Vega aircraft. This episode is a salute to Pan American Airlines. Welles, trying to define an "important" voyage, describes a routine China Clipper flight, reminding listeners that years of hard work made scheduled passenger flights possible, and tells about a Pacific Clipper flight that was forced to make a detour around the world when it encountered Japanese planes on its flight path. Discussing both these two flights and the Japanese attack on Wake Island with members of a Pan Am Clipper crew, Welles formulates a definition that takes into account those who work behind the scenes in preparation for a voyage as well as what a voyage "adds to the dignity of man." In closing, an announcer explains the importance, particularly in wartime, of Pan Am's innovations and leadership in air transportation.
