ROCKLINE: STEELY DAN {LIVE FROM THE MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO IN NEW YORK CITY} (RADIO)
Summary
One in this syndicated radio series which features interviews, phone calls from listeners, and the recordings of some of the music world's most popular artists. This edition, hosted by Bob Coburn, features the reclusive duo Steely Dan. Coburn welcomes Walter Becker and Donald Fagan, who are promoting "Two Against Nature," their first album in twenty years. Becker admits that he was at first reluctant to reunite and tour, but he explains that he made the commitment after casual gigs with his partner elicited an overwhelmingly positive response. Coburn mentions that the two are appearing on "The Late Show with David Letterman," PBS, and VH1's "Storytellers" in addition to tonight's "Rockline" interview. He then plays the Steely Dan chestnut "Reelin' in the Years." Coburn then turns over the questioning to fans who call in to the program or are in the audience. One asks whether Becker and Fagan have an easier time writing songs because of their many years together, and Fagan states that it is not easier as their standards keep getting higher. Becker then dismisses a question about his own personal favorite Steely Dan song by insisting that he does not listen to any of his own music once it has been recorded. Three fans then ask about some of the most persistent rumors about the duo. The pair confirm all of them: they at one time planned to release a country album; the song "Cousin Dupree" is about incest; and actor/comedian Chevy Chase, a college friend, once drummed for the band. Coburn then plays several more tracks from the band's albums in quick succession: "My Old School," "Jack of Speed," "Do it Again," "Hey Nineteen," and "Janie Runaway." Includes commercials.
