CHEERS: HOME IS THE SAILOR {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar.

A great deal of changes have taken place since Sam sold Cheers to a corporation and left to sail the world. Most of the regulars no longer attend, and Diane is now in Hollywood working as a television writer. Carla is pregnant with Eddie's baby, although it's not certain how he feels about it. Sam returns to the bar, recognized only by a few. His boat sank and now he wishes to return to Cheers as an employee, but his efforts are stymied by the new bartender Wayne, a dull person who claims to be able to mix any drink. Sam also meets the bar's new manager: Rebecca Howe, who surprises Sam with her attractive appearance.

Sam speaks with Rebecca, but his flirtations appear to have no effect on her as she coldly rebuffs his requests for a job. She appears to be highly success-oriented, whereas Sam maintains that running a bar should be fun. Sam makes an emotional appeal to her, noting that he realized Cheers had a great deal of good memories for him, and that it's the closest thing to a home that he has. Rebecca gives him a part-time job as a relief bartender out of pity. She has a phone conversation with her boss (which Sam surreptitiously listens in on), who was a fan of Sam's baseball career and convinces her to offer him a full-time job. She offers Sam the job; he does not accept until he gets a begrudging "please" from Rebecca.

However, in order to avoid having Woody laid off, Carla enacts a conspiracy to get Wayne fired. Norm and Cliff, along with several other bar patrons, manage to infuriate Wayne into leaving when they all order a seemingly nonexistent drink that Woody knows how to make. Rebecca recognizes the conspiracy and decides to fire Sam, but he manages to sweet-talk her into giving him a second chance. She relents, but warns Sam that she will not tolerate any more of such behavior. The episode ends as Sam gets Rebecca to smile. Commercials deleted.
