Highlights of this program include the following: Hirshhorn tells Rosamond Bernier of his decision in 1960 to place his art collection in a public museum, and of President Lyndon Johnson's suggestion of Washington as a location; designed by Gordon Bunshaft and directed by Abram Lerner, the museum opened in 1974; Hirshhorn recalls his childhood in Brooklyn and his early interest in art; Bernier notes Hirshhorn's admiration for Thomas Eakins; Hirshhorn discusses collecting French art from 1940 to 1946, and how he made his fortune in uranium mines in Canada. Other highlights include the museum's sculpture garden, featuring Rodin's "Burghers of Calais," and the museum's sculpture collection, which includes works by Degas, Rodin, and Matisse. The museum's collection also includes Reginald Marsh's "Steeple Chase Park," and Red Grooms's "Bohemian Party Scene."
