JACKIE GLEASON SHOW, THE {THE HONEYMOONERS: NEW YEAR'S EVE PARTY} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy/variety series featuring Jackie Gleason. This program includes "The Honeymooners," a series of sketches about Ralph Kramden, a blustery bus driver, his long-suffering but understanding wife, Alice, and their neighbors, Ed and Trixie Norton. The program opens with The June Taylor Dancers performing a calendar dance to celebrate 1954, followed by Gleason's opening monologue about Ray Bloch's recent wedding. In "The Honeymooners" sketch, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey invite the Kramdens and the Nortons to a party, but Ralph's boss schedules him to work on New Year's Eve. At first, Ralph does not want to go out on New Year's Eve because he does not want to spend any money, but when the Kramdens and Nortons are invited to the Statler Hotel as the Dorseys' guests, Ralph quickly changes his mind. When Ralph learns that he has to work that evening, he talks to his boss, Mr. Marshall, and pretends to be sick to get out of work. Ralph is unaware, however, that his boss and his wife also have reservations at the Statler Hotel for the New Year's Eve celebration. The sketch concludes with a performance at the party that features Tommy Dorsey on trombone, his orchestra, and Jimmy Dorsey on saxophone. Gordon Polk sings "Ain't She Sweet" with the orchestra. After the sketch, Gleason brings out the Dorsey brothers and speaks about having them on the show. Includes commercials. Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Coca-Cola Company.

(Series title varies; "The Jackie Gleason Show" from 1952-1961 and 1966-1970; "Jackie Gleason and His American Scene Magazine" from 1962-1966. "The Honeymooners" spin-off replaced the variety series 1955-1956.)
