DICK CAVETT SHOW, THE, {PREMIERE} {WOODY ALLEN,
BEVERLY SILLS, JACQUELINE WEXLER, ROBERT SHAW} (TV)
Summary
The premiere of this series of late-night talk/variety
programs, hosted by Dick Cavett, featuring interviews
with newsmakers and people in the political and cultural
forefront. On this program, Cavett's guests include
actor/comedian Woody Allen, opera star Beverly Sills,
educator Jacqueline Wexler, and actor/playwright Robert
Shaw. Cavett opens the program with a monologue in
which he jokes about how peculiar it feels to be back on
late-night television, why the network is privately
worried about the show, and how nice the snowfall has
been in New York City the last few days. Cavett then
welcomes Woody Allen, who discusses the following
topics: why he didn't wear his white sneakers for the
program; how his work in the comedy "Play It Again Sam"
has been going; whether he is bothered by the
recognition he receives on the streets from fans; his
feelings about nudity on the stage; his New Year's
resolutions; and how he feels about the Nixon
administration, particularly Vice President Spiro Agnew.
Next, Beverly Sills performs a number from an opera.
She then joins Cavett and Allen to discuss the following
topics: what her upcoming career has in store; whether
she feels that some people are born with naturally
beautiful voices that need little training; her family
life; and how she feels about the rock 'n' roll
generation and some of the popular music groups.
Cavett's next guest, Jacqueline Wexler, joins the group
and discusses the following topics: her appointment as
president of Hunter College in New York City; why she
favors the controversial open admissions policy; the
controversy over her educational position; how she would
handle a student uprising; and her transition from being
a nun to becoming a college president. Cavett's final
guest is Robert Shaw, who comments on the following
topics: the backlash over the most recent play he wrote,
"The Man in the Glass Booth"; the difference between
joking about people from America and joking about
people from England; how he earned his reputation of
being an "unruly" actor in his youth; how he feels about
most of his performances; the difficulty of abandoning
his English accent for certain roles; how alcohol
has been a part of his professional life for many years;
and the birth of his eighth child. Shaw then sings
"Someone I've Already Found" from from the upcoming
Broadway musical "Gantry." Includes commercials,
promos, and a public service announcement.
(Cavett hosted several talk shows under the title "The
Dick Cavett Show," which aired on ABC from 1969 to
1972, on PBS from 1977 to 1982, on the USA network
from 1985 to 1986, and on CNBC from 1989 to 1995.
During 1973 to 1975, the show aired irregularly as part
of "ABC's Wide World of Entertainment." Other versions
of "The Dick Cavett Show" include a variety series on
CBS in 1975 and a talk show on ABC in 1986.)
